.96 WE SftLUTE NATIONAL 4-H CLUB WEEK
It Was Some Kind
Os An Experience
by
Donna Jean Weir
We got there on Monday
morning. There we stood,
tour girls and one leader,
at the college of ABAC. We
were going to be there a
whole week. Well, you
know, we went through
that lunch line and, boy,
Near Dahlonega
*Leadership Camp
Really Memorable
by
Beth Hamer
This past June, Central
District held their annual
leadership camp, at Camp
Wahsega, nine miles north
ot Dahlonega, Georgia. I
had the priviledge of going
camp this
year. Kathy Weir, a fellow
4 H'er, went and so did our
' County Agent, Larry
Pierce. That one week's
stay at Wahsega was
wondertul, made possible
by the brisk, clean air, blue
skies, and beautiful
mountains.
The theme for the camp
was “The Spirit ot '76''. We
divided up into groups and
went to six different
Bicentennial classes.
Larry Pierce taught
Boone, a class on
survival. For a swimming
pool they had a lake, with
real cold water! A
beautiful mountain stream
with falls even made camp
prettier. Oh, yes- we can't
forget about food. The food
was great!
Georgia's 4-H
Congress Exciting
by
Pat Bowen
State Congress is an
opportunity every 4-H'er
shc'tjld look forward to and
try'to participate in. All
through the year 4 H'ers
busy themselves working
on a demonstration for the
county eliminations. The
winners of these
eliminations then begin
work on a demonstration
for the District Project
Achievement (DPA).
Winning at DPA entitles
you to a trip to the Georgia
State Congress. This is
possibly the most exciting
week ever in your 4 H
experiences and truly one
you will benefit from as I
did. 1 won the county
eliminations, and at DPA
in the Fashion Review
project.
During this week I made
many new friends and saw
old friends. Through the
week all the 4 H'ers give
demonstrations. The
winners are announced at
given times during the
week. The girls in Fashion
Review are possibly the
busiest of all 4-H'ers. They
give several Fashion
Shows at the Riches Tea
Room and one at the An
ny ,»l Banquet the last night
of the Congress. The 4-
H'ers have a chance to
visit the State Capitol and
the winners of special
projects visit different
offices and buildings.
Each day breakfast,
lunch and supper banquets
are sponsored by different
companies. Also, there are
several honored guests and
speakers. If you work hard
the food wasn't that good;
but the young men serving
it sure were!
Just to let you know, the
title of the camp was
Community Pride. We
were scheduled for classes
on beautifying our com
munify. It was extremely
We had recreation every
afternoon and night and on
Wednesday they held a
talent show and on
Thursday a Bicentennial
dance where everybody
wore something patriotic.
We also had vespers every
night, and on the Thursday
before the dance we had it
at the amphitheatre in the
mountains.
What I dreaded, I think
just about everybody else
dreaded it too, was
leaving. I didn't want to
leave Wahsega and also
dreaded the long drive
home.
This trip provided us
with an unexpected tour of
Atlanta. The Peach County
4 H bus got lost. And so did
the car I was riding in!
Larry Pierce gave us a
nice tour of Atlanta while
trying to find his way out.
But the whole week was
real good; in fact this
whole summer has been an
enjoyable and memorable
one. And 4 H made it all
possible.
enough during the year you
have a chance at one of the
scholarships or a trip to the
National 4 H Congress.
This has been just a
glance at the Georgia State
4 H Congress. I encourage
each 4 H'er to work hard
this year and every year
and try for your trip to the
Georgia State 4 H
Congress.

Our 4-H Club
Is Never Boring
by
Arrie Donald Rumph
Our club is never boring;
that's why I like my 4-H
Club. We talk about Rock
Eagle Camp and all kinds
of special activities that
sure aren't boring. Some of
us are going to Six Flags on
4-H Day on October 18,
1975. Other 4 H'ers are
planning on attending 4-H
educational. We learned
how to make hanging
baskets. All you have to do
is get something you can
hang up outside and get
sprigs of other plants and
plant them. Os course, you
use proper planting
procedures.
We had our fun in the
evening after an eventful
day. One night we were
invited to attend the
Freshman Orientation
dance. The band, "Eli",
played; they were fan
tastic and so was the
dancing. We also had a
great time swimming and
playing tennis in our spare
time. Or we just lay around
the dormitory.
As I said before, we
really had a fantastic time.
This was only one of the
many activities we par
ticipated in throughout the
summer. 4-H in Houston
County really had a
swinging good time this
summer. So sorry you
missed it!

4 H isn't as old as the

The special week is

DRA is not all work;
there is also recreation.
You meet many new

4-H Summers

My summer this year
was full of fun and ac

We discussed activities tor

No doubt about it, 4-H is
proud of its history. And
the Bicentennial is an
appropriate time to pause

heritage and ac

nearly 70 of our nation's

Some people may still
remember 4 H as "a

Houston County we know
that 4 H is a forward
looking organization, and
and say that you're the

want to hug them.

We had the girls get up at

get ready for breakfast at

had a full day ahead of
them. Each activity they
were involved in gained
points for the Cherokee

behind the camp was to
play Indian. To be a good

was able to make a craft of

for that we are grateful.
We know that our 4 H ers
will be meeting the
challenges of tomorrow
with the same enterprising
spirit that has built the 4 H
program to its present high
level ot success. The Club
is currently fulfilling the
needs and aspirations of
7.2 million youths in the
nation, more than 160,000
of them in Georgia and
2,004 in Houston County.
One thing we like about
4 H is that it holds onto the
basics as it changes and
adapts to keep up with the
future. 4 H still teaches
young people the skills
needed to raise a cow and
cook a meal. But it has
expanded greatly in the
past tew years to include
suburban and urban kids,
too. And it teaches all of
them rural or city - how
to speak in public, the
correct way to photograph
a landscape, and how to
encourage community
development and
citizenship.
