Historian, Researcher
To Edit County History
The Houston County
Library Board has ap
pointed a Historian and
Researcher for the county
to write a history of
Houston County. The
Historian is Mrs. Bobbe
Hickson of Perry. The
Researcher is Mrs. Sarah
Hunter of Warner Robins.
In her application for the
position of Historian, Mrs.
Hickson outlined goals of a
history. She stated, "The
history of Houston County
must not be a simple
recording of facts, for facts
must be related as they
have affected the people of
the county. Properly done,
an undertaking of this
genre can fulfill a
multiplicity of objectives:
Association during the last
year and project some of
the goals for the next six
months, especially as they
relate to the Legislature.
Os special interest was
discussion centering on
proposals for raises for
state employees, in
creasing mileage reim
bursement to 15 cents per
mile, the Merit System
reclassification study, and
the reorganization of the
Department of Human
Resources being proposed
by Commissioner Jim
Parham.
Members attending then
met with District
Representatives on State

relate concerns they want

HOUSTON QUERRIES...Byjo
Have you seen the shady spot where rushing
waters splash into glorious spray at Cascade Falls
near Warm Springs?
Have you seen Dowdell Knob on Pine Mountain?
The scenic, restful beauty of the valley below is
one of the reasons it was the late President
Roosevelt’s favorite “hiding place”.
Have you seen and caught the fragrance of the
lovely Ginger Lily?
Have you seen the cool, winding paths through
historical Indian Springs State Park?
Have you seen the giant oak beneath whose
branches 4000 stood to hear John Wesley preach?
Have you seen the World’s largest infantry
training school? It is so near- Ft. Benning,
Georgia...a mighty US. Government tool.
"To PAST generations
the history will be a
tribute- a chronicle of
their successful struggles
to change with the
changing times in a
progressive and admirable
manner."
"To CITIZENS OF
TODAY it can be a means
by which county unity may
be realized through an
intelligent appreciation of
the strength of our
diversity."
"To FUTURE
GENERATIONS it will be
a legacy an inheritance to
provide in the certain
chaos of their times not a
crutch or prop, but the
foundation for an inner
strength. Strength based
on the assurance that
others before them have
met the challenges of their
generations with integrity
and dignity."
MRS. BOBBE HICKSON
Bobbe Smith Hickson

MRS. SARAH HUNTER
Mrs. Sarah Williams
Hunter was born "in the
middle room of a big home
in the Oaky Woods Wildlife
Reservation near
Kathleen." Her early life
was that of a farm girl,
with its many character
building chores.
Mrs. Hunter was
educated in the Perry
schools for 11 years
beginning in 1950. In 1961
her family moved to
Bonaire and she eventually
completed her school
education at Dudley
Hughes Vocational School
in Macon.
Mrs. Hunter was
Secretary and Historian

Mrs. Hunter compares
being associated with
writing a history of
Houston County as "an
adventure comparable to
Columbus sailing the
Atlantic or Tom Sawyer
drifting down the
Mississippi."
