Downtown Redevelopment
Downtown Bank To
Renovate Main Office
G. Francis Nunn,
chairman of the board of
The Bank of Perry, an
nounced this week the
bank will renovate the
exterior of the main office
down iwn in an Early
American design in
keeping with the downtown
renovation projects now
underway here.
Nunn stated, “We at The
Bank of Perry have made
the decision to begin

Target date for
dispensing the P.A.L. gifts
this year is Monday,
December 22. Items and
donations from schools will
be picked up on Wed
nesday, December 17.
Some thought is being
given to possibly having
recipients pick up their
packages at the P.A.L.
Dec. 13, At 10 A.M.

that would like to place a
float or other unit in the
parade can arrange to do
so by calling him at 987-
2194 or 987-1610 or the
Perry Area Chamber of
Commerce at 987-1234.
Raffield said "home
made" floats will be
eligible for a contest which
carries $25, sls and $lO
prizes.
The parade chairman
stated, "We are inviting all
organizations and clubs to
renovation of our main
office at this time to
demonstrate our con
fidence in the Perry
Redevelopment Au
thority's plans for
downtown revitalization
and how much the total
restoration of downtown
Perry means to our bank.
We want to show the
confidence we have in our
central business district
and our community and
headquarters, but also
being considered is
delivering pacKages to
recipients.
Chairing this year's
Finances drive is Rev. J.B.
Smith. Cash or check
donations can be given or
mailed either to Rev.
Smith at the Perry United
Methodist Church, or to
enter some type of unit in
the parade to help make
this the biggest and best
Christmas parade we have
ever had in Perry."
Raffield said bands and
other special units in the
parade will be announced
in the next few days.
The highlight of the
parade will be the arrival
of Santa Claus, who will
arrive in his sled at the end
of the parade. Watch The

boxes"- gifts to elderly
persons who would ap

during the holiday season.

Don Parkinson, vice
chairman of the Perry
Redevelopment Authority,
the spearheading agency
of downtown
revitalization, stated, "On
behalf of the Perry
Redevelopment Authority,
I am extremely pleased
that The Bank of Perry is
making this move at this
time to join others in the
central business district in
a step towards a better,
more economically sound
future for the heart of
Perry. I am also pleased at
the confidence shown by
the bank in the future of
downtown Perry and in the
community as a whole."
Design and construction
of the renovation of the
bank is being done by
Mullins Construction Co. of
Perry. Renovation will
include new wooden
windows and doors, a new
roof, false chimneys and
extensive landscaping in
the parking lot area behind
the downtown bank. A
brick entrance way In the
front of the bank will also
be constructed.
The Bank of Perry has
two other branches at
Eastgate Shopping Center
and an Early American
designed branch office at
Grant Plaza Shopping
Center.
Construction on the
project is expected to
begin in the next few days.
The gift boxes that will be
given to the needy families
will consist of clothing,
food stuffs, and toys. Last
year 250 boxes were given
out.
Anyone wishing to make
a contribution other than
cash or check, such as toys
or clothing, can take the
contribution to the Neigh
borhood Service Center on
U.S. 41 South next to the
Bus Station, or to either the
First Baptist, St. Patrick's
Catholic, St. Christopher's
Episcopal, or Perry United
Methodist Church.
The next meeting of the
P.A.L. volunteers will be
Thursday, November 20, at
11:00 AM. at the First
Baptist Church on Main
Street.
Stabbing
Fatal To
Ferry an
A Perryan was killed
Tuesday night in a stab
bing incident on Broad
Street. Marvin Vance, Jr.,
was dead on arrival at
Perry-Houston County
Hospital at 9:17 P.M.
Tuesday night as a result
of being stabbed in the
back, allegedly by a steak
knife.
Police Chief B.E.
Dennard stated Wed
nesday morning that a
subject, Janet Radford,
was taken into custody at
the scene of the slaying. At
press time, the nature of
charges in the matter had
not been determined.
Dennard reported that
Vance may have entered
the Radford house through
the back door by force. He
said Vance was said to
have been carrying a
pistol. The stabbing came
as a result of an argument.
Patrolmen Willie Coates,
Charles Lewis and
Talmadge Padgett- in
vestigated the matter.
Detective Giles Webb is
conducting a further in
vestigation.
3,000 Shriners Coming To Perry
Making big plans for Nov. 22 are these members

“Spirit Os ’76”
Perry Mayor James 0. McKinley is really getting into the “Spirit of 76” as
he poses here in one of two authentic costumes he has had made for the Olde
Fashioned Christmas at the Crossroads celebration set here in December and
for the Perry Bicentennial celebration beginning in 1976. Mayor McKinley
proposed the idea for the “Olde Fashioned Christmas at the Crossroads” and
it has now grown into a full month of events that includes participation by the
entire community. See a schedule of the events on page 5-A inside. Mayor
McKinley’s costume was designed and made by his sister, Mrs. Louise
Crockett of Perry. The Mayor will wear the costume during many of the
special Christmas events planned here.

Political Forum Here Nov. 25
ATTENTION ALL CITIZENS OF PERRY!
A political forum will be held Nov. 25 in the
★ courtroom of the county courthouse in Perry at a
7:30 P.M. All announced candidates for Perry city
elections will be present with the exception of
Mayor McKinley, who is barred from par
ticipation by the Hatch Act. The candidates will
give statements of issues as they see them. This
will be followed by a question-answer session to be
moderated by the Young Democrats of Houston
A.B. Minor, Recorder of the Al Sihah Shrine
Temple in Macon; Cecil Moody, long time Shriner
and member of the local Shrine Club. More than
3,000 Shriners are expected for the special day to
be held here in Perry. Further details and special
salute to the local Shriners will be published in
next week’s Home Journal. (See editorial on page
4-A.)
