Mirex Fire Ant Aerial
Spraying Resumed Here
Tuesday morning, six
milti-engine aircraft began
aerial spraying in nine
South Central Georgia
counties, including
Houston County, in an
attempt to help eradicate
tire ant infestations. The
planes flew out of the
Cordele airport, and
distributed Mirex fire ant
bait at the rate of one and
one fourth pounds per
acre.
According to Houston
County Extension chair
man, Emmet Whelchel,
the area included all of
Dooley, Pulaski, and
Bleckley counties, and
portions of Twiggs,
Houston, Macon, Crisp,
Wilcox, and Dodge
counties. Part of Houston
County was treated last
year, with treatment
resuming where it stopped
The Mirex is mixed with
other materials such as
ground up corn cobs and is
treated with soybean oil.
Fire ants are grease
eaters, and are attracted
to the oil. The ants take the
bait back to the nests
where it is fed to the ant
queen and young larvae,
thus eventually destroying
an entire colony.
The large honeycomb
nests built by fire ants
make almost impossible
the harvesting of grain. In
addition to the plane
applied poison, officials
are hoping for delivery of
Mirex in bags that can be
applied by hand by far
mers and residents.
State Agriculture
Commissioner Tommy
Irvin said he hopes a
newer, less concentrated
form of the pesticide will
be available by Sep
