MEDICAL EXAMS
MISSED COSTLY TO VA
AND VETERANS
Veterans scheduled for
medical examinations for
compensation and pension
should make every
possible effort to report as
scheduled But In the event
they cannot keep their
appointments, they should
notify the VA Outpatient
Clinics in advance. This
advice comes from
Georgia Veterans Service
Director Pete Wheeler who
said that failing to give
advance notice to the
clinics makes "losers" of
both the VA and the
veterans
"For the veteran, it
means unnecessary delay
In completing action on his
claim and subsequent
receipt of his com
pensation or pension
check," said Wheeler
"and it could result in
setting his claim aside for
failure to cooperate.
"For the VA clinic, it is
valuable time lost when
physicians, technicians
and clerks have reserved
time for a veteran and then
he fails to appear as
scheduled Usually it is too
late to schedule someone
else in his place, and other
veterans, wailing in line
for their examinations,
also are penalized through
no fault of their own
"When a veteran
realizes that he cannot
report for an examination
at the specified time, he
can be of real service to his
tellow veterans as well as
to VA medical personnel,
said Wheeler, "if he will
just call and advise the VA
Outpatient Clinic. This will
enable the clinic to
schedule another veteran
in his place."
VA PROVIDES CB
RADIOS FOR SOME
DISABLED VETERANS
Certain disabled
veterans who are eligible
to receive special
automotive equipment
from the VA, may also find
that they are eligible to
receive citizen band radios
from the VA
According to Georgia
Veterans Service Director
Pete Wheeler, "a CB radio
may be furnished certain
veterans when it is
medically determined, on
an individual basis, that
such a device is necessary
tor the sate operation of a
specially adapted
automobile."
Veterans who served
during or after World War
II and who suffered ser
vice connected disabilities
Involving the permanent
loss or loss ot use, of one or
both hands or feet, or
permanent Impairment ot
vision of both eyes to a
prescribed degree, are
eligible to receive a basic
automobile grant of $3,300
from the VA
While the automobile
perchase grant is payable
on a one time basis only,
the VA provides for special
adaptive equipment on the
grant purchased
automobile as well as on
any automobile an eligible
veteran may purchase in
the future.
Special adaptive
equipment includes such
items as automatic
transmissions, hand
operated brake and
throttle controls, power
windows, power seats, air
conditioning and special
devices which may be
necessary for an applicant
to enter and exit from an
automobile
