Has Grown From Small Beginnings
Memorial Heights
Baptist Church was
organized on February 2,
1955 in the home of Rev.
and Mrs. Tom H. Harmon
at 505 Carroll Blvd. A total
of 39 people were present
for this meeting.
Temporary officers
elected were: Pastor, Rev.
Tom H. Harmon, Clerk, J.
I. Locke; Treasurer, Mrs.
Clyde Rumph and Finance
Committee, J.S Horne,
Mr. Lloyd, Mrs. Grace
Sledge, Mrs. Ruth
Lockerman Dennard, and
Mrs. H.J. Parker.
Donations were made for
the building tund with Mrs.
Joseph P. Mann making
the first contribution.
The second meeting was
held in the home of Mr. and
Mrs. H.J. Huns, 59 were
present. It was decided to
hold future meetings in the
basement of Rumph's
Grocery, owned by Mr
and Mrs. Clyde Rumph, on
U.S Highway 41, South,
each Thursday night.
Mr. and Mrs. E.F.
Bellflower and H. E.
Gordon offered a tract of
land on which to build the
church. It was voted to
accept the land from Mr.
and Mrs. Bellflower on
March 3, 1955.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde
Rumph made a con
tribution of SIOOO.OO to the
building fund. Mrs. Rumph
won the SIOOO.OO in a
contest sponsored by the
Houston Home Journal for
the most subscriptions.
Mr. Milton Beckham
surveyed the lot of land
free of charge and plans
were made to begin con
struction. Harlan Rat
eree turned the first
spade of soil in the
groundbreaking
ceremony. The foundation
was completed on April 21,
1955. All the bricks used in
the church were hauled
from Macon, Ga. by Clyde
Rumph and members
unloaded the bricks at the
church.
The ladies met each
week, bringing their
lunches, and quilted quilts
and made dresses to raise
money for the building.
The first piano was
given by Mrs. E.F.
Bellflower and Mrs. Clyde
Rumph. Mrs. Connie
Hardin also gave a piano to
the church. The piano
presently in use was given
by Mr. and Mrs. J.M.
Locke. The hardwood floor
was given by Mr. and Mrs.
E.F. Bellflower.
The first service was
held in the new church on
May 12, 1955. The church
was officially organized
with Rev. J.J. Morrow and
his deacons from
Hayneville Baptist Church
and deacons from Houston
Lake Baptist Church ac
ting as council. There were
35 charter members, 28 by
church letter and 7 for
baptism. Rev. Tom H.
Harmon was called to
serve as pastor. Other
officers elected were as
follows: Clerk, Mrs. H.J.
Hunt; Secretary and
Treasurer, Mrs. Clyde
Rumph; Deacon, Rev.
G. Hutchinson; Board of
Trustees, J.M. Locke,
Grady Brown and J.J.
Horne; Pianist, Mrs.
Mattie Mauldin; and
Building Committee, Clyde
Rumph, E.F. Bellflower,
H. Hunt, J.S. Horne,
Harlan Ratteree, J.M.
Locke, J.l. Locke and J.J.
Benton.
Sunday School was
organized on May 18, 1955
and held in a house joining
the church property owned
by Mr. and Mrs. E.F.
Bellflower. Sunday School
was first held in the church
on July 3, 1955. The Sunday
School rooms were com
pleted in 1956. Most of the
work on the building of the
church and Sunday School
rooms was done by the
members of the church.
The first baptismal
service was held June 26,
1955 at Houser's Mill on
U.S. Highway 96 with 9
being baptized. The first
revival was held August 14,
1955 and was conducted by
Rev. Harmon. The first
deacons were elected
September 17, 1955 and are
as follows: T.R. Buckner,
Harlan Ratteree, J.M.
Locke, H.J. Hunt, J.S.
Horne, Grady Brown and
T.l. Ingram.
H.E. Gordon gave the
church a lot of land to bui Id
a home on for Rev. Har
mon. The lot was later sold
and money applied to the
church building fund.
Marvin Griffin, Jr. and
Olin Hamlin were licensed
to preach by Memorial
Heights in 1957. Elberta
Baptist Church, Elberta,
Ga. was organized by
Memorial Heights in 1958
and Rev. Marvin Griffin,
Jr. was called to serve as
pastor. Charles Woodruff
was licensed to preach in
1959 and Wallace Dean was
licensed to preach in 1976
by Memorial Heights.
Song books were pur
chased with members
buying one for each
member of their family
plus one extra. New church
pews were bought, some
members purchased one or
more and presented them
to the church in memory of
a loved one. The Com
munion Table, two chairs
and Lectern were given by
Mrs. Clyde Rumph and
Mrs. Jack Moss. The three
pulpit chairs were given by
Mrs. H.J. Hunt. The two
tables in pulpit were given
by Mrs. Clyde Rumph and
Mrs. Grady Brown. The
two brass flower con
tainers used in pulpit were
given by Mrs. Clyde
Rumph. The offering
plates were given by Mrs.
Joseph P. Mann. Carpet
was installed with Jack
Moss giving $300.00 and
Mrs. Clyde Rumph giving
carpet and having it in
stalled in the pulpit.
Second Memorial
Heights Baptist Church,
Perry, Ga., was organized
by Memorial Heights in
1962. Memorial Heights
made a contribution of one
half of the land, the bricks
and labor.
The baptistry was built
in 1965. Mrs. Clyde Rumph
gave the water heater and
had the beautiful mural
painted on the wall of the
baptistry. Mrs. J.M. Locke
bought and made the
draperies for the new
baptistry. The first bap
tismal in the new baptistry
was conducted September
12, 1965 by Rev. Harmon.
Those being baptized
were: Jackie Bowen,
Johnny Brown, Earlene
and Earl Dean, Joey Mann

of Colonel John Dooly
chapter of the Sons of the
American Revolution at
Cordeie.
Mr. McCulloch, who is a
charter member of the
Cordeie group which was
founded in early 1975, was
installed Monday night at
the installation banquet.

J. Hall Schenck, Jr., who
received the B.S. degree in
Business Management in
1975 from Auburn
University, was the
recipient of the B.S. degree
in Hotel and Restaurant
Management from Florida
State University in June.
Mr. Schenck, son of Mr.
and Mrs. J. Hall Schenck,
Sr. of Perry, has accepted
a position with the Racquet
Club in Lakeland, Fla.
and Tommy Nunalee.
The church began a
Christmas program in 1968
for the people in the jail
and the Houston County
Work Camp. The first
Christmas, 17 boxes were
carried to the jail and fruit
and nuts went to the Work
Camp. The program was
expanded the next year to
include the Perry Police
Dept. Christmas, 1975,
there were approximately
176 boxes prepared by the
members. A Christmas
program is held at the
Houston County Correc
tional Institute.
Each Christmas box
contained the following: 3
apples, 3 oranges, 3
bananas, 1 box of raisins,
Va pound of walnuts, Va
pound of brazil nuts, 1
handkerchief, 1 pair of
socks, a box of stationary,
20 stamps, 6 slices of
homemade cake (made by
the members) and 1 pound
of peanut brittle (made by
Mrs. Clyde Rumph and
Mrs. Joseph P. Mann).
Memorial Heights with
drew from the Southern
Baptist Convention in 1970
and became an In
dependent Baptist Church.
Dr. Charlie Dean Day
was observed by the
church on December 29,
1974. One thousand dollars
was given to the Mercer
University Medical
Building Fund in honor of
Dr. Dean.
Mrs. E.F. Bellflower
gave the church the vacant
lot joining the church
property in 1975. The
Pulpit Bible was presented
to the church May 11, 1975
by Rev. Harmon.
