The Robins course will
welcome joggers with an
archway through which
the two mile course
begins. It Is physically
located south of Lake Luna
and the FAMCAMP.
The first 300 yards of
straightway enables the
jogger to warm up. After
that it twists and turns
within the tall pine area, it
will take the average
runner about 20 to 25
minutes to complete. The
jogger can expect to tackle
a 40 foot step-like hill climb
between stations 8 and 20.
The final station consists
of a ramp constructed with
logs and leads into a
sandfilled pit. At that
point, the two miles end
and a 100-yard cooling off
path remains for walking
adjacent to Lake Luna.
The staff of the Morale,
Welfare and Recreation
Division expect the course
to be popular, after noting
that there are quite a few
civilian and military
personnel who now use the
existing courses. The
rustic surroundings will
provide a pleasurable
outing for all joggers,
officials said.

A BOAT FOR ALL
SEASONS
Canoes have to be the
most versatile things
afloat. There are many
boats which will do some
specific things better than
a canoe, but no other form
of aquatic transportation
can touch the canoe for its
variety of multiple uses.
The canoe is to boating,
what the gilder is to flying.
Canoes don't shatter the
solitude of a quiet day with
the roar of a seventy five
horse power motor. Their
hulls transmit each subtle
water current to the
paddler just like a glider
pilot feels each shift of
wind.
Canoes are great for
fishing small lakes which
lack facilities for laun
ching larger boats from
trailers. A single fisher
man can portage a canoe
for a surprising distance
since they are so light and
easy to carry. This
characteristic is par
ticularly advantageous
when you want to fish a
remote spot, like a beaver
pond, that is far from the
nearest road. This por
tability also allows the
canoe to be carried around
dangerous rapids and
other obstacles when
traveling in a stream or
river.
When draped with
camouflage mosquito
netting, a canoe can be
HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL THURS., JULY 29, 1*74,
converted into a floating
duck blind. Camouflaged
In this manner, a canoe
can be positioned near a
stool of decoys or floated
down a larger stream tO'
sneak up on feeding ducks.
Devices are available
which allow small out
boards or electric motors
to be attached to canoes for
traveling in large lakes.
The electric motor Is
particularly handy for
traveling around the edge
of a lake and casting
toward the shallows.
Outrigger type pontoons
are available, similar to
the ones seen on the ocean
going canoes of Hawaii,
which will stabilize canoes
for fishing or traveling in
large bodies of water
where wind and waves
increase the chances of
capsizing.
You can even equip a
modern canoe as a sail
boat. The kit for this
conversion includes a sail,
a mast, a rutter and even a
keel. If you plan to learn
to sail your canoe, expect
to get wet several times
while you are mastering
the technique!
The movie
''Deliverance'' made white
water canoeing and
Georgia's Chattooga River
PAGE 10-B
seem extremely exciting.
Both the sport and the
river are exhilarating,
they are also dangerous.
Many canoeists lose their
lives each year because of
poor j udgement and lack of
experience. Your first
white water canoe trip
should only be attempted
after you have had a
thorough course of in
struction in canoeing.
