Thanked By Boosters
*\)ear Mr. Branch,
One form of public
recreation in Perry, each
summer, is boys baseball
and girls softball. About
200 young people ages 6
through 17 participated in
1976 Houston County Rec.
Dept., due to limited funds,
can only provide minimum
equipment. The City of
Perry provides financial
aid to our youth and for
their help we are very
grateful.
Without the Perry
vnerchants who sponsor
teams the youth program
would suffer severely.
Thank you for an early
season article on what
sponsorships mean to
Perry youth. As the 1976
season draws to a close I
would like to thank the
Perry business firms who
worked with me, some for
three consecutive years.
Their donation, via team
sponsorship, allowed our
local volunteers to buy

this week at Lenox Square
in Atlanta.
This is the second con
secutive year that the Split
Rail Fair has received
second place in Georgia
tourists attractions
category, annual at
tendance under 500,000, at
the only in-state travel
show in the nation. The
week's activities is
sponsored by the Georgia
Chamber of Commerce.
The official Bicentennial
Event consists of over 50
intriguing exhibits which
competed for Ribbon
Awards in six categories.
According to Charles
Newby, fair director, "We
are grateful that Split Rail
has won another award for
the International City and
all of Houston county.
Actually, we couldn't help
but win honors with all the
splendid cooperation we
constantly receive from
the Chamber of Com
merce, the news media,
city and county officials,
Leisure World and
especially all the fine
people in Houston County.
Yet, again we are most
grateful and believe the
honors belong to all of us.
So we say thank you for
making it possible."
The Wellston Fair has
become a tourists at
traction for Warner Robins
and Houston County.
Tourists came from 25
states last year to view
work of artists and skilled
craftsmen from
throughout the southeast.
The fair captures the
pioneer-rural life of
America and is an ex
perience into our heritage.
"Freedom of Creativity"
is the theme for this year's
September fair to be held
Sept. 18-19 at the old Joel
Walker farm at Leisure
World on Feagin Mill
Road.
The fair is an official
Bicentennial event of the
Georgia Commission for
the National Bicentennial
Celebration and the
Georgia Chamber of
Commerce.
already mentioned that
Arthur Hailey's "The
Moneychangers" Is
going to be shown for six
hours on NBC (a la "Rich
Man, Poor Man"). The
cast to that one keeps
growing. Now there is Kirk
Douglas, Susan Flannery,
Timothy Bottoms, Helen
Hayes, Lome Greene,
Joan Collins, and Jean
Peters. If you don't
recognize that last name,
maybe Jean Hughes as in
Howard Hughes will be
more familiar.
There will also be TV
versions of "Roots", a
story of a black family's
history from Africa to the
United States. It will be
twelve and a half hours
long and will feature O.J.
Simpson, Cicely Tyson and
Edward Asner. Then there
will be a version of Taylor
Caldwell's "Captains and
Kings" which has not been
cast yet.
It looks like a good year
for us as far as television is
concerned but they are
really going to have to go
some to equal the ex
citement that this year's
Olympic's have created.
ABC deserves a gold
medal for their excellent
coverage of the games.
They have used unique
talent in bringing us the
best from Montreal. I
especially like the
coverage of the com
mentators such as Mark
Spitz, Cathy Rigby Mason,
Miki King, O.J. Simpson
and even Howard Cosell. It
has been television at its
finest, the way the medium
can be and should be used.
