Mrs. Pearce
Mrs. Lucy Ida Pearce,
age 51, of Unadllla died
Tuesday, December 7, 1976
at the Perry-Houston
County hospital after an
extended Illness. Funeral
services will be held at 3
p.m. Thursday, December
9 at Henderson Baptist
Church. Rev. Grady Stokes
officiating. Interment will
be in the Henderson
Cemetery.
The family will be at the
residence of Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Prater In Hen
derson.
A native of Dooly County
Mrs. Pearce had
lived in Unadllla only one
year. She was a member of
the Henderson Baptist
Church and was an em
ployee of Matthews
restaurant.
Survivors Include her
husband, Levin A. Pearce

Greer
John Murphy Greer, age
26, of Norfolk, Va. died
Sunday, December 5, 1976
after an extended illness In
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Funeral services were
held Wednesday,
December 8 at 2 p.m. at
Christ Sanctified Holy
Church. Interment was In
the church cemetery.
A lifelong resident of
Norfolk, Mr. Greer was
employed with Norfolk
Warehouse Company.
Survivors include his
wife Diane Greer, and 1
son, John M. Greer Jr.
both of Norfolk, Va.; 2
daughters, Kelly R. Greer
and Kathy M. Greer of
Talledega, Ala,; 2 sisters,

Grand Jury Says
Drug ‘Sellers’ Jailed
In a general 27-page
presentment returned
Tuesday evening, the
Houston County Grand
Jury recommend that
"habitual (drug) offenders
be detained in correctional
Institutes" until their trial.
The Grand Jury added, "In
other words, "KEEP 'EM
OFF THE STREETS".
The Jury suggested "a
complete review of past
criminal records of
habitual offenders be
made by appropriate court
officials" They said this
should be done in order to
prevent the habitual of
fenders "from par
ticipating in illegal drug
operations during lengthy
court proceedings".
In other re
commendations pertaining
to either law enforcement
or drugs, the Grand Jury
suggested that the sheriff
hire three additional
guards for the County Jail
on Kings Chapel Road and
staff the facility with at
least two guards around
the clock.
The Jury recommended
television cameras be

Library
The Houston County
Grand Jury in the course of
its investigations made
several visits to the three
libraries within the county
library system. They
talked with the 12-member
board and as a result,
Tuesday made several
recommendations for
improvement in the
operation of the system.
They recommended that
the library board give the
Executive Director of the
system administrative
control of day to day
operation. The Jury
suggested an accurate
record be kept al ail action
taken in both public and
executive session, as
required by the Georgia
Sunshine Law.
They further said the
library board should
"comply with non
discrlminatory criteria in
hiring personnel" ;
suggested the board abide
by "approved policies"
relative to "educational
requirements tor vacant
positions"; and proposed
that accomodations be
made at the headquarters
(in Perry) to house the
Director, his secretary and
system cataloguer.
In a surprise suggestion,
the Grand Jury recom
mended that no members
be appointed to the 12-
person library board who
was serving as an elected
official on any of the four
funding agencies. The four
funding agencies include
the Perry City Council, the
Warner Robins Council,
Centerville Council, and
Houston County Com
mission.
Mr. Huff
Rites Held
Lucius P. Huff, 87, died
Friday December 3, 1976
after a lengthy illness.
Services were held at 2
p.m. Monday December 6
in the chapel of Watson-
Hunt Funeral Home of
Perry. Rev. Mason Davis
officiated. Burial was In
Wood lawn Cemetery.
Mr. Huff, a native of
Perry, had lived in Winter
Park, Fla., several years.
He was a retired Southern
railroad employee and a
Baptist.
Survivors include a son,
Ralph Huff of Winter Park,
Fla.

areas at the Jail tor
prisoner monitoring;
suggested floodlights be
installed in front of both
the Jail and Correctional
Institute so guards can
observe persons entering
the facilities; recom
mended legal action
against inmates who
destroy County property;
and recom mended
upgrading of television
cameras at the HCCI.
The Jury said "the oc
currence of persons being
released on probation or by
bond is much too high",
and said the law officers
frequently spend time
apprehending the same
people again.
It recommended the
"County and city judges,
justices of the peace, the
District Attorney and
probation officers show
cause for leniency in cases
where second and third
offenders are allowed to go
free on the streets."
They suggested the
various cities investigative
divisions be combined to
provide better service.

drug squad hired by the
Houston-Peach Drug
Squad.
They criticized a Warner
Robins daily newspaper
