The Board of Education

L.A. McConnell, Dr. Ben

Warner Robins. The school
board proposes to add two

The board suggested

and one school board
member from south of
Highway 96 (generally,
state representative Larry
Walker's district-not in

other counties).
The other two of the
seven proposed members
would be elected "at
large" from the entire
county, as Is the current
method.
Events mat may have
had much to do with the
suggestion Include
demands by black groups
for division of the county
commission and school
board members into zones.
The black groups have said
they think a member of
their races has a better
chance of being elected if a
countywide vote was not
required.
Salary Increase
The school board also
asked the representatives'
to sponsor legislation
hiking the monthly
salaries of the school board
members from the present
sum of SIOO a month
apiece. This salary was set
in 1958. By contrast the
coun'y commission
members make S4OO a

School Superintendent

annual open house, visited The Bank of Perry’s annual doll show, in which 132
dolls, dressed by local persons, were on display. The dolls will be donated by

HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL THURS., DEC. *, 1*74,
current term ends
December 31, but he was
re-elected In November to
another four year term,
after very narrowly
defeating challenger M.E.
Bailey in the Democratic
primary.
In recent weeks, several
people have surfaced In
favor of appointing the
school superintendent,
saying he would then be
removed from politics.
Opponents disagree,
saying the superintendent
should have to face the
voters at least every four
years.
PAGE 13-A
If the law Is changed, it
cannot become effective
until Perdue's new term
expires, simply because
such a law cannot take
effect until the term of the
person then in office comes
up for re-election.
If any or all three of the
proposals made by the
school board are adopted
in the General Assembly, a
referendum on each would
be necessary. The coun
tywide referendum would
be structured so that the
measures would be voted
on separately.
