Receive Awards
Due to a faulty roll of film, the group picture of
the Public Recreation Boosters awards presen
tation was spoiled. Those volunteers receiving
awards from the Perry Boosters were: Patsy
Hudson, Brenda Heard, Cheryl Peavy, Judy Mo
rales, Gail Sorrows, Gerald Hill, Jody Matt, Joe
Barker, Leon Porter, Jack Huckaby, Jim Parker,
Monroe Webb, James Ash, Linda G. Jones, Donna
Hayles, Lois Nelson and Natalie Norris. This
dedicated group of coaches, trainers, team
mothers and cheerleader mothers were presented
with plaques by the Boosters for a “job well
done.”
Tommy Storey, Monroe Webb, and Jim Parker,
coaches of the co-champion “B” League Perry
Giants, received trophys from both the Houston
County Recreation Department and the Perry
Rec. Boosters for their accomplishment and
service to the youth of the community.
The Home Journal regrets the “goof-up” with
the picture but extends a community-wide thank
you to all the Perry volunteer workers in the
Houston County Recreation Department youth
program.

Watkins Hits Jumper

Twiggs County jumped
in front early, 6-2, but then
Mr. Richardson and
company went to work.

Watkins put the Panthers
on top 8-6 and they were
never headed the
remainder of the' way as
coach Rick Duncan's
cagers turned the contest
into a rout. The first
period ended with Perry
leading 18 13.
Lead by a flurry of
baskets by Richardson and
Watkins, the Panthers
increased their advantage
to 37-21 at halftime.
Guard Roy Hill upped
the Panthers lead to
twenty points, 41-21, early
in the third period on a top
of the circle jumper and
the lead was still sixteen
points, 49-33, with only one
quarter left.
Using a combination of
starters and reserves, the
Panthers continued to
blister the Cobras. A
jumper by Watkins
produced the biggest
margin of the night, 60-37,
at 4:28 and Leon Green's
25-foot jumper with twenty
seconds left put the final
points of the night on the
board, 68 48, and their first
win of the season.
Richardson and Watkins
yanked down 14 and 12
rebounds respectively to
pace the Panthers in the
carom category.

Pantherettes Topple
Twiggs For First Win
The Perry Pantherettes
recorded their first win of
the 1976-77 basketball
season last Friday night in
Perry by turning an
erratic performance into a
thrilling 48-44 triumph over
the Twiggs County Cobras.
Coach Bob Morrow's
ladies are now 1-1, after an
opening loss to D.F.
Douglas.
Perry looked like they
were going to make short
work of the visitors from
Jeffersonville by racing to
a 12-2 lead at 3:25 of the
first quarter. Seniors
Debbie Jackson and Sue
Lambert divided the dozen
points. After Lambert

This happy group of Perry High Panthers won
awards at last Wednesday night’s football awards
banquet sponsored by the Perry Panther Booster
Club. A large contingent of mothers, fathers,
friends, and Panther supporters were on hand to
witness the annual event. Tom Giffen of the
Macon Telegraph served as the emcee.
Front (seated) left to right: David Porter, a
senior fullback - safety, who was the most
valuable player recipient; John A mail, a senior
defensive back, who received the coveted coaches
trophy; and Alvin Boone, a junior, who captured
the best defensive back award.
Standing (left to right) are: Willie Kendrick, a
senior tackle who won the best defensive lineman
trophy; John Ridley, a sophomore tailback who
rewrote the record book and took home the best
offensive back award; Anthony Grace, a senior
defensive cornerback and winner of the most
improved player trophy; Fred King, senior
defensiveman and choosen winner of the “Guts"

These five Perry Panthers received special
recognition at last Wednesday night’s football
banquet held at the Perry High cafeteria. Left to
right - Dwayne Grant (played every offensive
down for the Panthers during the 1976 season),
Johnny McCarty (set a new PHS record by
averaging over 30 yards per pass reception),
Quinton Harvey (set a new standard by throwing
the Pantherettes froze
from the field and failed to
net a two-pointer for the
remainder of the quarter
as the Cobras cut the lead
to 12-7 at the initial rest
stop.
Twiggs County cut the
Perry lead to 12-11 at 6:13
of the second stanza before
Jackson connected on a
followup layup to give the
Pantherettes their first
basket in almost five
minutes.
Twiggs tied the contest
at 18 all at 1:45 of the
second perior but trailed
23-20 at the half when
junior Leola Green netted
Perry's final five points.
Perry's third quarter
Award Winners
antics were nothing but
frustration. The Pan
therettes took 13 shots
from the field and missed
them all until Jackson
finally ended the drought
by sinking a short jumper
with six seconds left in the
third stanza. Free throws
by Kathryn Richards and
Jackson kept the Pan
therettes in the game and a
stingy Perry defense
limited the Cobras to just
two field goals as the third
quarter ended with Perry
on top 29-28. *
The final eight minutes
turned into a see saw af
fair as the lead swapped
hands seven times before
the Pantherettes finally
trophy; Kent Fleming, senior that anchored the
Panthers offensive line and winner of the best of
fensive lineman trophy; James Parker, junior
guard, the Leon Green, senior middle linebacker,
named co-captains by their teammates.
Coaches Bob Morrow, Allen Shaw, Dave
Crockett. Willie Street, and James Kinchen
presented the awards.
Others receiving recognition were: team
consultant Curtis Riner; managers Speedy
Langston and Steve Peavy; statisticians Kathryn
Richards, Jenny Vogt, and theryl Stubbs;
Panther mascot Pat Harmon; cheerleaders
Elaine Kimball, Barbara Dick. Kathy Roberts,
Cheryl Peavy, Susan Mills, Robin Mims, Sharon
Stokeling, Debra Lumpkin, Debra Roberts, Pam
Hunt, Donna Caldwell, Marsha Bridges and
Melody McCarty; cheerleaders sponsor Miss
Sunny Myrell and Pep Club sponsor Miss Janet
Defore.
