Bert Brown (22) Surrounded By Gators
....After Short Pass Reception Friday Night
Questionable Penalties Hurt
Flat Hornets Dumped
28-6 By R iver North
Last Thursday night in
Macon, the Westfield
High Hornets saw their
three game win streak
come to an abrupt halt, as
the River North Gators
handed Westfield a 28-6
whipping. Penalties,
"flat” Hornet play and
the determined Gator
defense all combined to
seal the verdict early,
with the River North
team breaking three big
plays to excite the Gator
tans.
Westfield's SEAIS
Region 3-A A record fell to
0-3, and the overall chart
now stands at 5-3.
Westfield has but one
region contest left, this
week with John Milledge
in Perry.
The Hornets' four
linebackers led their
tacklers, as usual. Gene
Moreland ’ recorded ten
(10) stops, with Billy
Jerles getting nine, Jon
Pierce eight and Tyrone
Duckworth six. Defensive
ends Eric Griffin and
Daryl Duckworth also
played well, racking up
eight and nine tackles.
Jeff Kennedy and
Chuck Kezar served as
co-captains for Westfield,
as a sparse crowd
gathered in huge Hen
derson Stadium. The
Hornets won the toss,

seven plays. The touch
down came on a 45 yard
burst on a power sweep
by Paul Sharpe with 5:38
left in the first stanza.
Chuck Barrentine's
PAT kick made the score
7-0.
Stunned by the score,
Westfield tried to
retaliate but a pass over
the middle was in
tercepted at the Hornet
41. After making a first
down, the Gator offense
ran into an angry group
of Hornets led by Tyrone
Duckworth and Jon
Pierce and Westfield held
at its own 29. Again the
Westfield offense was
stopped cold, forcing
another punt upfield.
The quarter ended a
play later, with River
North perched on the
midfield stripe. On the
very first play of the
second period, smooth
Chris Oxford broke off
right tackle, cut outside,
then back to the middle
and roared 50 yards to the
endzone. With 11:51
showing before in
termission, Westfield was
behind 13-0 and
Barrentine's PAT upped
the lead to fourteen
points.
Westfield finally
recorded its first two first
downs, utilizing power
sweeps and effective
counter plays to march to
their own 48. But a
halfback pass attempt
was overthrown, forcing
yet another punt to the
Gators. The River North
group got a taste of their
own medicine, however,
as their own attack began
to sputter. They did
manage to grind out a
little yardage before Billy
Jerles led a Hornet
defensive charge. Jerles,
a 165 pound senior
linebacker, was in on
three tackles in four
plays.
With the clock winding
down, the Hornets edged
into Gator territory for
the first time on an 18
yard pass from QB Greg
Gentry to HB Johnny
Tucker over the middle.
But on the final play of
the half, Gentry's aerial
attempt to Tucker on a
deep pattern was picked
off by a Gator.
In the final two periods
the antics of the men in
striped shirts enraged the
Westfield team, coaches
and especially the fans.
Time and again spurious
penalty calls gave River
North added impetus and
denied Westfield
comeback attempts. Two
plays Into the third
quarter an interception
by Johnny Tucker and
brilliant runback was
cancelled by a flag for
alleged pass interference
in another area of the
field.
As tempers grew short,
the Hornets retaliated
with vicious but clean
tackling that dumped
River North backs. Gene
Moreland, Eric Griffin,
Billy Jerles and Jon
Pierce each popped
opposition ballcarriers,
but nevertheless the
Gators proceeded
downfield and Chris
Oxford scored from seven
yards out 5:42 left in the
third period. Chuck
Barrentine's PAT made
the score 21-0.
The Hornets got into
enemy territory again,
thanks to a penalty on
River North, but on
fourth and five at the 44,
Greg Gentry was halted
five Inches short of a
badly needed first down,
as the referees made
their decision. Four plays
later the Gators
recovered a Hornet
fumble at the Westfield
41, as the third period
closed.
With the sticks
recording third and four
(at the 24), Johnny
Tucker swept outside,
broke past a secondary
man and rocketed 21
yards to the WHS 45. But
River North twice
dropped Hornets for
losses, and forced yet
another kick.
On second and four at
the Westfield 44, Gator
back Chris Oxford went
through a truck sized hole
off right tackle, ac
celerated past the Hor
nets and jetted for his
third touchdown, with
9:06 left in the game.
Chuck Barrentine's PAT
made the score 28-0.
With a little assistance
from the refs, Westfield
finally got on the
scoreboard. A halfback
pass from Tucker to
Jerles was picked off by
the Gators, but for some
reason the officials called
pass interference on
River North. The proper
call appeared to have
been holding on River
North after the in
terception.
Anyhow, Westfield
used a FB trap pass to
Gene Moreland to get to
the Gator 40. After
securing a chainmover at
the 38, Westfield faced a
fourth and 14 at the 42.
Back to pass, HB Tucker
saw an opening and
darted upfield for 32
yards to the Gator 10. A
pass interference call on
the Gators three plays
later gave the Hornets
new life again, and on
second and goal at the
three. Gene Moreland
bulldozed over with 4:21
left to play. A try for two
failed and the score was
28-6.
The contest ended
eleven plays later, with
Westfield in possession,
but 59 yards away from a
score.
