Hornets To 29-18 Win
The Westfield High
Hornets football team
last Friday night sum
moned up courage and
determination to roundly
upset the favored John
Milledge Trojans 29-18 in
a contest fought at the
Hornets Nest in Perry.
The triumph lifted
Westtield's record to 6-3,
with two contests left,
and was their first in
SEAIS 3-AA.
Senior runningback
Johnny Tucker rushed for
240 yards on 32 carries to
lead the offense. So far
this campaign. Tucker, a
6-1, 180 pounder, has put
together 975 yards and is
almost a cinch to break
the highly coveted 1,000
yard mark. Tucker also

Stingers Roll To JV
Title Over Beechwood
Westfield has a new
championship team. The
LIT Stingers darted to a
14-0 victory over the
Beechwood Academy
Junior Varsity last week
giving the Westfield team
a 5-1 season record.
Beechwood fell to a 4-2
record coming in second
to the Stingers.
Westfield, Beechwood,
Fullington Academy and
Baker Academy formed a
football league this year
for sixth, seventh and
eighth graders. With the
exception of a loss to
Baker, the Stingers had
an exceptional season
giving up only 30 points in
six games while scoring
110 points.
In last week's game
with Beechwood, the
Stingers struck quickly
with guarterback Cater
the board, one a thrilling
82 yard burst in the third
quarter.
On defense the stan
douts were many, led as
usual by 160 pound
linebacker Gene
Moreland who recorded
13 tackles, 190 pound
junior tackle Mark
Richardson with nine hits
and two fumble
recoveries, safety Bert
Brown with eight tackles
and a pass theft, and
linebackers Billy Jerles
and Jon Pierce with
seven stops each.
Billy Jerles and Johnny
Tucker served as co
captains, with Westfield
winning the toss and
electing to receive. After

yard pass for six points.
The point after failed. In
the second quarter, Gary
Bramblett and Richard
Nipper ran the ball to the
Beechwood five. On the
first play from the five,
Gary Bramblett scored
behind the blocks of
Roddy Moreland, Bill
Blackstock and Bubba
Ethridge. Bramblett
blew in for the point after
giving the Stingers a 14-0
edge.
Throughout the second
half the Stingers main
tained ball control.
Beechwood's offensive
team seldom touched the
football and when they
did the Stingers kept
them bottled up.
Defensive standouts were

own 31, the Hornets

punt to the John Milledge

shocked Westfield fans.
Deftly using his two
standout running backs,
Milledge QB Ronald
Gordon drove the Trojans
25 yards to the Hornet 49
before they punted to
Westfield's five yard line.
There a play later
disaster struck as the
Hornets fumbled, with
Bruce Lane recovering
for the Trojans at
Westfield's 19.
Five plays later Trae
Phillips allegedly scored
from one and a half yards
out, and if he did dent the
goal line it was only by a
matter of an inch.
Anyway, the six points
went up and with 3:40 left
in the first period, West
field was behind 6-0.
Lane's PAT kick made
the score 7-0.
Stung by the touch
down, Westfield came
roaring back with
vengeance. Starting from
their own 30, Westfield
drove seventy yards in
thirteen plays on a march
that consumed 4:57 on the
clock. Great interior line
blocking opened good
holes for the power
running backs.
Key plays were a
counter play for ten yards
by Johnny Tucker around
midfield, the same play
again to the Westfield 48,
a personal foul on
Milledge, and a run off a
pass formation by Tucker
on fourth and five at the
Milledge 32. The touch
down came on a one toot

the second period.
Eschewing the tie,
Westfield went for two
and made it, as Tucker
exploded over two
tacklers. The score was
now 8-7 in favor of
Westfield.
But the Trojans
retaliated to go ahead
three minutes later when
Bruce Lane connected on
a 27 yard field goal with
7:22 left in the half. The
score was now 10-8.
Major contributors on the
drive were Trae Phillips
and Dwight Danuser,
with Phillips outshining
his more heralded
teammate.
The remainder of the
half was spent in sparring
that produced no further
scores. Outstanding
defensive plays recorded
by Westfield included a
fumble recovery by Mark
Richardson on the Trojan
38, a pass interception by
Greg Gentry on West
field's six yard line, and
hard hitting by Moreland.
Both teams wasted
scoring opportunities due
to interceptions.
By halftime Tucker had
gained 102 yards, with
Trae Phillips ringing up
91 for Milledge. Dwight
Danuser had another 57
for the Milledgeville
team, as they had
outgained Westfield 162 to
131 on the ground.
In the second half the
hitting became louder
and more determined.
John Milledge got the
second half kickoff and
drove upfield for two first
downs before Mark
Richardson recovered his
second fumble, at the
Westfield 35. But West
field returned the favor
and the Hornets had to
put up a great goal line
stand.
Danuser galloped to the
ten on the first play. Then
QB Gordon was nailed on
the nine by Eric Griffin,
Tyrone Duckworth and
Billy Jerles. Next,
Richardson, Ben White
and Gene Moreland
hammered Gordon to the
turf on she five. Gordon
got to the two before
being bulldozed by Jerles
and Bert Brown. On
fourth down a pitch
around end to Phillips
came up three yards
short as Brown and
Griffin stopped the touch
down threat.
Taking over at their
own three, Westfield had
thoughts of going 97
yards. Tucker swept to
the six, then Gentry kept
to the 10. A first down was
established at the 18 and
on the next play elusive
Johnny Tucker went over
left tackle through a tank
sized hole, burst outside
and raced 82 yards down
the sideline as Hornet
fans became delirious.
The six points came with
2:46 left in the third
stanza. Tucker's PAT
kick made the score 16-10.
Three plays later John
Milledge was back on top
16-15. Dwight Danuser
returned the kickoff to
the Trojan 33. Then
Danuser burst to the 37.
On second and six Trae
Phillips took a pitch from
QB Gordon, got outside
and galloped 67 yards to
paydirt, the clock
showing 1:41 left in the
period. The Trojans went
for two and made it on a
pitch to Danuser. The
score was now 18-15 in
favor of John Milledge.
But Westfield refused
to roll over and im
mediately marched back
upfield. Bert Brown
returned the kickoff to
the 44 and twelve plays
later the Hornets were
ahead for good. Major
contributions were et
ched by the Hornet of

nine yard burst by
Tucker as he shook two

good block from Ben
White, with 8:49 left to
play. Tucker's PAT kick
made the score 22-18.
But Westfield was not

another score on another
lengthy drive. Gene

yards over tacklers to the

got the score from four

Panthers
This Friday night the Perry High Panthers will
have a two fold mission on their hands when they
travel to Eastman to battle the Dodge County In
dians in an important region 3-AA confrontation. A
win over the Indians would snap a personal six
game losing streak- the Panthers haven't beaten
Dodge since 1970- and would keep the Cats slim
playoff hopes alive.
Perry, after being idle last week, Is currently 5-2
on the season, with a 1-2 region slate. Dodge is 4-3
overall and 2-1 in conference play. They're only
setback was to Dublin In region play.
Last year the Red Men came to Perry and won a
defensive battle, 7-0, to record their sixth straight
win over the Panthers. John Ridley rushed for 113
yards and closed to within 111 yards of the 1,000-
yard mark, but it was not enough as the Indians
stopped a late Panther threat to win a thriller.
The last win by the Panthers over Dodge was in
1970, when the Perryans topped the Indians 17-7.
The Panthers were 8-2 that season and it was Coach
Will Roy Cooley's last game as a Perry coach. He
then left for Central of Thomasville where he has
built a powerhouse.
Perry has fullback Sam Kendrick back In the fold
at full speed after three weeks on the injured list,
"We're in good shape for this one," Coach Bob
Morrow commented Tuesday night.
