Due To Strike
Pabst Third Quarter
Sales Down Slightly
Third quarter and nine
month 1977 sales and
earnings for the Pabst
Brewing Company were
announced today by
Pabst President and
Chief Executive Officer,
Frank C. DeGuire,
following a meeting of the
Directors.
Earnings for the
Company dropped in the
third quarter, DeGuire
said. Third quarter in
come was $2,098,000 or 24
cents per share on sales
of $177,692,000 for the
three months ended
September 30, 1977
compared to income of
$9,972,000 or $1.17 per

Honorable mentions
went to: Erik Matlock,
Jenniter Sinyard, Robby
Rowell, Jayne Barlow
and Tony Moss. Named
best overall poster of the
$213,301,000 for the same
period of 1976.
Third quarter 1977
earnings and sales were
affected by a ten week
strike at the Company's
Peoria Heights, Illinois,
brewery. The strike was
settled Monday, October
17.
DeGuire pointed out
that until two months
ago, the Company was
slow to compete in the
growing light beer
market because of the
time necessary to
develop a naturally
brewed light beer without
adding enzymes or other
additives. Pabst Extra
Light is now moving out
of a limited number of
test markets into ex
panded distribution.
Pabst shipped 3,981,000
barrels in the third
quarter of 1977 as com
pared to 4,825,000 barrels
for a similar period of
1976.
For the nine months
ended September 30, 1977,
Pabst reported earnings
of $19,186,000 or $2.24 a
$571,024,000 compared to
earnings of $26,145,000 or
$3.06 a share on sales of
$593,227,000 for the same
period a year ago.
The Company shipped
contest was the entry
submitted by fourth
grader Jim Moody.
Judges were Mrs. Chase
from the Perry Bookstore
and Mrs. Golden from the
Houston County
Libraries.
12,667,000 barrels during
the nine months ended
September 30, 1977 as
compared to 13,429,000
barrels for the nine
month period of she prior
year.

Slow Cooker Tips- It
was just about a year ago
that slow cookers were
the THING. People who
already had one were
giving them as gifts, and
those who didn't have one
were making plans so
pick one up on their next
trip to she appliance
store.
I guess some slow
cookers are still in the
box. Ofhers were put on
the shelf after being used
once or twice. But some
folks fell in love with
theirs, and the love affair
has lasted; they use their
cookers one, two-even
three-times a week.
Meats are among the
most popular foods for
slow cookers, but meats
seem to have given more
people more problems
than any other one thing
they prepare.
Let's review a few
pointers which may lead
to more success with
meats in slow cookers.
High or Low?-
-As you know, meats
generally are at peak
flavor when cooked on
HIGH for a shorter period
of time rather than
cooked on LOW for she
maximum cooking
period. On she surface,
that doesn't appear that
meats are suited for slow
cookers. But they are.
Just cook the meat only
until if is tender. And do if
as quickly as your slow
cooker will allow.
-Use a rack. When
preparing meats that
contain a lot of fat, a rack
will keep the meat out of
the fat just as it does
when oven-roasting.
-Place meat over
vegetables. Vegetables
require a long cooking
time in a slow cooker. If

is best to place she
vegetables in she pot
first, and then she meat.
This way, the vegetables
will be cooked when the
meat is tender.
-No need for browning.
Most meats do not have to
brown before cooking.
The browning is often lost
after hours in the slow
cooker. You may want so
brown fatty cuts, such as
spare ribs, but drain off
excess grease before
cooking.
