How many readers remember the very first football team
to be fielded in Perry at Perry High School? The year was
1954 and team’s head coach was University of Georgia All
American Herb St. John. The team’s record that first season

Perry Man Shot
By His Step-Son
A 34 year old Perry
man was shot with a 22
caliber rifle behind the
left ear Sunday morning
and was seriously
wounded. At press time,
Larry Arnold of a Lake
Joy Road address
remained in the intensive
care unit of the Houston
County Hospital.
Arnold was allegedly
shot by his 16-year-old
step-son in a bedroom of
the Arnold home as the
family was preparing to
attend church. The
youth's name cannot be
released under Georgia

According to the
Sheriff's dept., the youth
took his stepfather's car
and two guns from the
house after the shooting.
He has been charged with
aggravated assault and
faces possible charges of
auto theft and theft by
taking in the case.
He was also charged
with several traffic
violations in Houston and
Bibb Counties as a result
of the high speed chase
Tuesday afternoon.
The 16-year-old youth
was on probation in Bibb
County for burglary at
the time of the shooting,
according to the Sheriff's
department.

DAR Trip
Miss Martha A. Cooper
returned from a ten day
trip to Washington, D.C.
where she attended a
National Executive
Board meeting of the
NSDAR. Miss Cooper, as
Librarian General, is a
member of the twelve
member board which
handles business of the
national society. The
DAR library is one of the
best and largest
genealogical libraries in
the country. While in
Washington, Miss Cooper
received notice that a
daughter in Wisconsin
had left an estate of
$77,484 for the library.
On the way up she
! stopped several days in
l Richmond, Va. where she
f did family research for
i friends.

Fletcher were honored on
their 50th Wedding An
niversary with a
reception at the Garden
Center given by their
children; Mr. and Mrs.
Merrell Bailey of
Ellaville, Mr. and Mrs.
Cecil Bailey of Perry, and
Miss Jean Trisch of
Ellaville.
Mrs. Merrell Bailey
greeted the guests at the
door and invited them to
sign the guest book.
Miss Patricia Rose,
granddaughter kept the
guest register on a table
overlaid with a white lace
cloth and ornamented
with an arrangement of
yellow daisies and white
carnations in a golden
candleholder.
The gifts were
displayed on a table
overlaid with white lace
and centered with an
arrangement of mixed
garden flowers. Mrs.
Jeanette Carden opened
and displayed the gifts.
The refreshment table
was covered with a white
cloth overlaid with lace
and ornamented with
gold and white wedding
bells and ribbon adorning
the center and side of
table. A five branch
candelabra with burning
yellow tapers and yellow
daisy flower
arrangement was placed
to one side. The other side
held a four tier wedding
cake embossed with
golden roses, oold leaves
and figure 50 in gold.
Cake, nuts, cheese
straws, and punch were
served by Mrs. Quenelle
Wynn, Mrs. Shirley
Gllllspie, Mrs. Bonnie
Bailey, Miss Donna
Bailey, and Miss Lynn
Tidd.
Mrs. Fletcher was
attired in a pink crepe
floor length dress with a
rhinestone brooch at the
point of the V-neckllne.
She wore a corsage of
white and light pink
carnations.
Approximately 175
friends and relatives
called between the hours
of three and five p.m.
Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher
were married September
25, 1927. They have lived
In Schley County for the
past fifty years. She was
the former Mildred Farr,
daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Clifford Farr of
Perry.
Mr. Fletcher Is a life
long resident of Schley
County, son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar
Fletcher of Schley
County.
They have three
daughters, 12 grand
children and 2 great
grandchildren.

St. Patrick's Ladies
Guild held its monthly
meeting on Monday,
October 10th at the
church hall. After Father
Marshall offered a
prayer, Deanna Borden,
President, opened the
meeting. Plans were
finalized for the Church's
Annua I "Harvest
Festival" to be held on
Saturday, Nov. sth, at the
church hall from 10:00-
6:00. Mrs. Mary-Jo Of

announced today that
William E. Hudson of
Athens, Ga., Dist.
Governor of Rotary In
ternational, will be the
guest speaker of the local
club next Monday, Oct.

Bishop also noted that
Hudson will conduct a
special seminar for the
local club on Sunday
afternoon, Oct. 30, here in
Perry.

First Cove Rd., Man
darin, Fla. died Satur
day, October 8, 1977.
Funeral services were
held at 3 p.m. Tuesday,
October 11, at the Church
of Our Savior, Episcopal
Church in Mandarin.
Interment followed In the
Mandarin Cemetery
Dr. Sued was a native
of Ohio and had lived In
the Jacksonville area
since 1960. He was a
member of the Florida
Veterinary Asso. and
Jacksonville Veterinary
Asso. He was a graduate
of the University of
Georgia, class of 1960, a
member of Chi Psl
Fraternity serving as
president for two years.
He founded and operated
the Mandarin Animal
Hospital.
Survivors Include his
wife, Marcy Strother
Sued, three children,
Mike, Paige and Buff, his
parents, Mr. and Mrs.
N.J. Sued of Sarasota,
Fla.
The family suggested
memorials be made to
the Heart Association or
American Cancer Society
In lieu of flowers.

last Wednesday of each
month. The represen
tative can now be
reached any Wednesday
of the month at the City
Hall from 9 a.m. until 4
p.m.
