Chargers For 7th Win
Thoroughly outclassing
their opposition, the
Westfield Hornets last
Friday night rode
roughshod over the
McDonough Christian
Chargers, winning 47-0 at
Hornets Nest. The
was Westfield's
seventh against three
losses and saw Johnny
Tucker eclipse the 1,000
yard mark for the season
with 141 yards in just 14
carries.
The younger Hornets
played nearly two full
quarters and acquitted
themselves wel I.
Sophomore halfback Bill
O'Neal was shifted to
quarterback and directed
a tandem of Donny
Arrington, Candler
Pritchett and David
Washington that itself
over 100 yards and
had twin scores called
back only on penalties.
Other reserves showing
future greatness in
cluded: Wes Goodroe, Ed
Kezar, Alan Brown,
Robbie Branch, and Gene
Beckham.
Junior fullback-
I inebacker Gene
Moreland excited the
huge Homecoming crowd
with a nifty seventy yard
return of a punt for a
T.D., and 106 yards

hauls. Donny Arrington

won the toss, elected to

Tackles for the Saints
were Maurice Davoll 8,

PAT was blocked but
Westfield was ahead 13 0.
As the second quarter
got underway, Westfield
had control again,
unreeling a play from
McDonough's 44. Despite
a holding call, the Hor
nets rolled to their third
score, Gentry firing a
'‘pass in the flats to Tucker
for 25 yards to ignite the
score. Moreland bulled
for 23 yards to the five,
and a play later Gentry
found Billy Jerles in the
endzone on a down and
out pattern with 10:24 left
before halftime. Tucker's
PAT lifted the lights to 20-
0.
Billy Jerles recovered
a McDonough fumble on
the ensuing kickoff,
falling on the football on
his own 39. Johnny
Tucker ate up most of the
yardage to the goal on a
31 yard sweep around
end. Gene Moreland got
the score from two yards
out with 7:25 left on the
lights. Tucker's PAT kick
left the lights showing 27-
0 in favor of the Hornets.
Four plays later Mc-
Donough punted upfield.

the middle, faking past

Moreland roared 70 yards
to score with 5:16
showing. The PAT kick
failed but Westfield fans
buzzed at the 33-0 score
on the board. Moreland's
fine run delighted the
home stands, who
showered applause and
cheers.
Coach Marvin
Arrington inserted his
second line players at this
point, and Bert Brown
played quarterback for
Westfield. On defense

young battlers gang
tackling on every play,
except for solo efforts by
David Washington and
Billy Jerles. The half
ended with Westfield on
their own 47 yard line.
Arrington put his first
string back in the contest
as the third period began,
and after they stopped
the Chargers, Jon Pierce
returned the punt fifteen
yards to the enemy 30. A
play later Tucker jetted
25 yards to paydirt and
Westfield was ahead 39-0
with 9:28 left in the third
quarter. His PAT gave
Westfield a 40-0 com
mand of the contest.
The Hornets' final
seven points came after
Arrington put Tucker's
ability to run wide on
display. Johnny scored on
a run of over 30 yards but
an illegal procedure
negated the score. So
Gene Moreland bulled for
44 yards in four snaps and
Bert Brown went over
with 2:40 left in the
period. Tucker's PAT
made the score 47-0.
The Hornets finally
pulled their regulars at
this point and began to
utilize Candler Pritchett
and Donny Arrington on
rushes off tackle. Both
youngsters flashed
glimpses of brillance for
the remainder of the
contest. Chuck Kezar
picked off a Charger pass
as the third period ex
pired, and gave the
Perryans control at their
own 42 yard line.
Two plays into the final
12 minutes of play,
Pritchett broke over right
tackle, eluded a
linebacker and outran
secondarymen 45 yards
for an apparent six
points. Alas, Westfield
was judged guilty of
illegal procedure, and
had to surrender the
pigskin in enemy
territory.
Wes Goodroe, Robbie
Branch, and companions
denied McDonough any
running room so the
Henry Countians punted
upfield again. Taking
over at the Charger 47,
Donny Arrington im
mediately burst 37 yards
to the 10, and another
yellow flag brought the
Hornets to the 5.
Arrington scored on the
next play but a penalty
nullified she play and the
Hornets eventually sur

Hornets On The
Road For Finale
This Friday night at
8:00 p.m. in Macon's
Henderson Stadium, the
Westfield High Hornets
football team will seek to
close out Its 1977 season
with a victory over the
Tattnall Square Trojans.
Both teams currently
sport 7-3 records and the
contest is rated as a toss
up by most grid ob
servers.
At the end of this
spring's football practice,
Westfield met the
Trojans at the Hornets
Nest. Tattnall was a big
favorite, but the Hornets
won easily 26-6 and
shocked SEAIS experts.
So far this season the
Trojans have reversed
the example they set
back last spring. Playing
with grit and deter
mination, they have
fashioned seven victories
in ten contests against a
tough schedule. Losses
have come only to First
Presbyterian, Stratford
and Jonesco. One victory
was 27-7 over John
Milledge, a squad
Westfield defeated 29-18.
Westfield will have to
combat the Henderson
Stadium "jinx” to whip
Tattnall. Team leaders
for the Trojans are junior
quarterback Mitch Clark,
wingback Craig Jones,
Hedden. Hedden, Bell
and Brad Griffin scored
the PATs. They widened
the margin in the second
period to 30-0 when
Hedden scored again.
Each team scored one in
fullback Tracy
Ham II ton, and
linebacker deluxe Andy
Crews.
The Trojans like to put
the ball in the air and are
a lightning quick bunch
eager to avenge that
stinging defeat applied
last spring. Five Hornets
