Bonaire Woman Recalls
School Days With Gomer

For Joan Hazen, the
mother of six children
ranging from Junior High
twin boys to the oldest
daughter in Nurses
training, there's no such
thing as "spare time".
But the 44 year old
Homemaker puts visitors
at ease with relaxed

6th Avenue, Joan told of
watching Jim Nabors in
the role of Gomer Pyle on
the Andy Griffith show
and how she tried to
first place honors but no
team could match the
skill and finesse that put
the Davises In first place
for the second straight
week.
Coming In second was
the team of Doris and
David Hulbert; and Lois
and Milo Medlock took
third place honors.
The Wednesday
Morning Duplicate Group
met at the Club March 29.
The team of Scotty
Weems and Lois Medlock
won first place. Jewell
Smith and Beulah Sain
were a close second; and
in third place was the
team of Mai Chapman -
Betty Hatley.

caught his name on the

"and it dawned on me
who he was". When Joan
was a freshman at the
University of Alabama in
Tuscaloosa, Jim Nabors
was a senior there.
Joan explained that she
and Nabors were not
personally acquainted. "I
only saw him in passing",
she said, "but if I had
known he was going to
become famous I would
have gotten to know him
better".
She told of the college

In Mission Field
Discussed At
U.M.W. Meeting
United Methodist
Women had a program on
Responsibilities in the
Mission Field at the April
meeting, held Monday
afternoon at the Perry
United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Ed Weaver, co
ordinator of Christian
Global Concerns,
discussed the different
responses to mission
needs with emphasis on
world hunger. Quoting
Jesus' great commission,
"Go ye Into all the world
and preach the gospel to
all people —", Mrs.
Weaver urged the women
to carry out their duties
and responsibilities to
others to demonstrate
their love to Jesus Christ.
Keith Beckham, high
school student and son of
Mr. and Mrs. Milton
Beckham, talked on the
responsibility for Wit
nessing to others for
Christ. Quoting scripture,
this young man em
phasized the power of the
Holy Spirit experienced
by Christians and the
personal blessing
resulting from witnessing
for Christ. Keith was
presented by Mrs.
Weaver who concluded
the program with prayer

"Chances are slim that
he ever heard of me", she
said, "But if he did, if was
as "Miss Witters".
Pointing out his photo
in the 1951-52 Yearbook of
the Alabama University,
Joan said the celebrity
"was not nearly the size
then as he is now".
"But", she added,
"neither was 1".
Describing him as
being "tall and skinny",
she said he seemed to
always have a friendly
after his talk.
The business session
was presided over by
Mrs. Dan Britton,
president. Announcement
was made of the church
wide mission study to be
held Monday and
Tuesday, April 17-18, at
7:30 p.m. at the church.
The president called
attention to the change of
the date of the next
general meeting to May 8
at 7 p.m. It will be a
covered dish supper.
Rev. Thomas Johnson,
pastor, urged the women
to attend the observance
of the 150th Anniversary
of the Sunday School next
Sunday, April 9, at
worship services at the
church and the basket or
picnic lunch at noon.
May will be Family
Emphasis Month for the
church, Rev. Mr. Johnson
said. The Men's Club will
have Ladies Night at
their supper meeting
May 19. Older
American's Day will be
observed May 21, and
Mother's Day, on May 14.
An interesting worship
center carrying out the
theme of the program
was arranged by Mrs.
W.E. Marshall.

Friends of Mrs. Valerie
Blackburn, regret to hear
that she Is very ill in a
Gainesville, Florida
hospital. We'll
remember her in our
prayers.

Rev. Marvin Taylor and
family in our community,
Rev. Taylor is pastor the
the First Baptist Church
in Hayneville. We now
have two Rev. Marvin
Taylors in our small
town, the other one is
Presbyterian. We hope
this does not cause too
much confusion for our
postmistress - good luck

Robert Thompson's
father is at home in

hospital. Robert and
family visited him this
weekend and report he is
doing fine.

Other than size, the Mr.
Nabors as remembered
from college days by
Joan was "pretty much
the same as seen by his
many fans today.
The older Hazen
children were excited
over the discovery that
during their mother's
educational carrer, she
and Nabors passed
through the same doors.
"Sometimes one of the
children drag the book off
the shelf to show com
pany", Joan said.
Identified in the
Yearbook as Jimmy T.
Nabors whose hometown
was Sylacauga, he
studied in the School of
Commerce and Business
Administration at the
University of Alabama.
Nabors is listed as a
member of Delta Tau
Delta Fraternity;
Commerce Association
and Wesley Foundation.
His senior year at the
University was the
year Alabama narrowly
beat Georgia at football
with a score of 16-14.
"The same year", said
Joan, "Tech romped on
Alabama scoring a
victory of 27-7".
Natives of Alabama,
The Hazens moved to
Bonaire in 1968. Joan's
husband Don is a civil
service employee at
Robins AFB.
The family is affiliated
with The Bonaire United
Methodist Church and
actively involved in its
total program. Joan is
church pianist and also
accompanist for The
Happy Hearts Gospel
Music Group.

Dean's List for the winter
