“American Students More Relaxed”

Scottish Teacher Pays i
Visit To Perry Schools ;
The Loch Ness Monster
is largely a figment of the
imagination of the
Tourist Bureau of
Scotland, according to a
Scotsman who visited
Perry Higti School last
week.
"And it's a very
profitable figment," Tom
Smith laughed. "Those
nutty Americans visit
Loch Ness every day, and
they bring plenty of
money. They've even had
a submarine out there
looking for the monster."
Smith is head of the
Chemistry Department
at the secondary school in
Linlthgow, Scotland,
which is about 15 miles
west of Edinburg. Smith
explained that there are
seven grades in Scottish
primary schools and six
grades in the secondary
school, which is the same
as American high
schools.
Smith, who heads a
staff of 16 chemistry
teachers, says he only
has to use his leather belt
on students about four
times each term. He said
there are three terms to
the school year.
"Oh, yes, I give them
their licks when they
need them". Smith said.
"I administer the licks in
the palms of their hand,
and I'm not allowed to
punish girls or children
under 12."
Smith said when he
walks into a classroom in
Scotland and raps his pen
three times on his desk he
expects every student to
be seated; he expects
them to be silent, and
expects them to be giving
him their complete at
tention.
"Some of our critics
said that we are rigid,
very formal, and that we
maintain harsh
discipline," Smith said.

think we are moving in
that direction.
"What are my im
pressions of America?"
Smith asked. "I've been
in Georgia six weeks, and
my impressions are
fleeting, but 1 want to say
that the weather is

snowing lightly there.
"The handshaking
impresses me," Smith
continued. "Not only do
men shake hands who

noticed that some men in
