Veteran Pilot Flies Again
Perry's John Houser (C) is shown above as he receives his graduation
certificate in private pilot flight training from examiner Jim Brown (R)
at the Perry-Fort Valley airport. Houser flew Mitchell B-25 medium
bombers in World War II and commented: "It’s a lot different flying
these little airplanes.”
The B-25 was the first American airplane to bomb Japan in World War
II when Jimmy Doolittle led a flight of sixteen Mitchells off the deck of
the aircraft carrier Hornet in 1942.
Standing at left in Houser’s flight instructor, Gary Coleman.
Robins Painter Wears
A Suit On The Job!
Some people may show
pride in their work
through their attitudes on
the job.
Others may show off
their end product.
But one worker at
Robins AFB, James L.
Bowdry, shows his
feelings by wearing a
neatly - pressed suit, tie
and hat on his job.
So what? It's what
every office worker
wears, isn't it?
Maybe so, but Bowdry
is not an office worker.
BY MILDRED E. WARREN
Last Monday afternoon I had the
nicest surprise --1 looked up in my
shop to see someone "fly” through
the door and as she reached me she
unpinned a beautiful orchid and
pinned it on my shoulder. This
someone was my friend, Celestine
Sibley, who had just come from an
autographing party in Macon. She
was on her way to Douglas where
she was to be "partied” and have
another autograph session
Tuesday. Brenda Starr can have
her black orchid, I have one from
Celestine Sibley!
Her newest book SMALL
BLESSINGS, is one that is full of
the everyday “thankfuls” that life
offers, developing the theme that it
takes practice to appreciate them
and be grateful for them. Everyone
should read SMALL BLESSINGS,
it will make your everyday, hun
drum life suddenly seem very
wonderful and precious.
After we visited a minute we ran
over to The Book Store where we
picked up Ed Waters (the
Doubleday representative) who
was with her, and also Joan Chase,
owner of the book store and drove
over to see Nannette Green at her
lovely new home. Celestine knew
Nannette and Yates Green a long
time ago when they were in
Florida, and it’s always so good to
visit friends you’ve known for a
long time. We enjoyed our visit,
and as you know Celestine is one of
the blessings that gives you a warm
feeling of happiness each time you
see her.
I picked up one of her books, a
favorite of mine, A PLACE
CALLED SWEET APPLE, and
turned to the back of the book to her
Favorite Recipes from Sweet
Apple. I have selected three
recipes I think you will like, one a
Corned Beef with Macaroni which
was a favorite of her mother’s. This
appealed to me as I like corned
beef. Next I was pleased to find
Verda’s Sauerkraut as I had
several calls last Spring for this
recipe. Last of all I could not resist
the recipe for Olivia’s Apple
Relish. Apples are being raised in
our vicinity so this should be
welcome, I loved reading A PLACE
CALLED SWEET APPLE and I
think you will enjoy the recipes!
He is a painter with the
Civil Engineering
Division.
The 56-year-old native
of Thomasvllle has been
wearing a suit while
painting at Robins for the
past 12 years.
"The suit makes me
work neatly, he said,
explaining his strange
attire. "I can't stand
sloppy painting ... and I
try to be as clean and as
neat as I can. I have
never ruined a suit while
painting."
CORNED BEEF WITH
MACARONI
One of our favorite cheapy
quickies evolved by Muv when our
staples came out of a turpentine
still-sawmill commissary, which
my father ran for his uncle. When
fresh vegetables and meat were in
short supply or she was in a hurry
Muv would send me to the com
missary for a can of corned beef
(then 15 cents) and she would whip
up a dish that still rates high in our
family affections.
She began by sauteeing onions, a
finely chopped clove of garlic and a
bell pepper, if she had one, in a
little bacon fat in an iron skillet. To
this she added corned beef pulled
apart with a fork. When this has
cooked a minute or two add a can of *
tomatoes, cover and let it all
simmer while a package of elbow
macaroni cooks in another pot.
When macaroni is tender, drain,
blanch and add to the tomato-beef
mixture. Keep hot until the flavor
of the sauce has permeated the
macaroni. A little grated parmesan
cheese is a pleasant addition to this
dish that I’ve picked up in recent
years. With a salad and hot French
bread, company won’t snoot it.
VERDA’S SAUKERKRAUT
Wash cabbage, shred it fine and
pack in fruit jars, adding a
teaspoon of salt to each quart of
cabbage. Fill jars with boiling
water, tighten lids and seal.
You can use cold water, and let
the jars stand four days before
sealing, either way the result is
“clear” kraut.
OLIVIA’S APPLE RELISH
12 large apples
6 green bell peppers
6 red bell peppers
6 medium onions
12 large or 20 medium green
tomatoes
Grind all these in food chopper
and let drain or squeeze out the
juice. Bring to a boil 4 cups sugar, 3
cups apple cider vinegar and add
above mixture. Cook 15 to 20
minutes. Seal in clean jars. Makes
8 pints.
HAPPY COOKING FROM SWEET
APPLE!
In addition to assuring
he does a neat job, the
suit is also a symbol of his
skill at his job.
Bowdry, who began
painting in Thomasvllle
when he was 15, Is no odd
ball. He simply is proud
of his profession and
shows It by dressing
immaculately.
Since he has been
painting, he has received
several letters of com
mendation from directors
and tenant commanders
for his excellent work.
