Record Deceiving
The Westfield girls
softball team has been
playing exciting ball
despite their 1-3 record.
The Hornettes have been
in every game and could
very well be 4-0 now.
They lost a heart
breaker to Tatnall 8-7
when Tatnall scored late
to win. Next the Hor

This year's team is
composed of sophomores
Meyer, O'Neal, Kinsley,
White, and one senior,
Steve Bell. Coach Pat
Painter said, "I think we
have a good chance of
sending some boys to the
state tennis tourney this
year. Michael Kinsley
and Bill O'Neal have
improved a lot this year
and that really helps our
team."
WHS has returning

who is only a sophomore
this year. Meyer plays
No. 1 singles, for the

says, "Meyer is one of the
top tennis players in the

lead early but could not
-hold it.
Leading the Hornettes
have been Lynn Davidson
and AAard Griffin, who
are batting .500. Roxle
Lassiter is right behind
and can be counted on to
deliver in the clutch.
Defensively, Westfield
counts on Lassiter at
first, Davidson at short
stop, Griffin, in strong
field, and Donna Wills in
short field. This group is
responsible for many of
the assists and putouts
recorded by Westfield
this year.
Carson also carded a 68,
but lost by regression in
the A flight.
Will Frazier and Dottle
Frazier captured the B
flight with a 71, while
Troy and Jo Drew
finished second with a 75.

Willie Hopkins, who
would have been retur

tight end for the Jackets,
and Henry Walden, who
played for Central last
season, died as a result of
injuries received in the
two-car crash.
Hopkins and Walden
were riding in a small
import with two other
former Central players
when the mishap oc
curred. State Patrol
reports showed that their
vehicle pulled onto the
road in a rural section
near Thomasville into the
path of a speeding
vehicle.
Ironically, the other
car was driven by Craig
Hurst, who will be a
senior offensive guard for
the Yellow Jackets next
year.
Hurst and the two
former Central players
survived the crash, which
split the smaller car in
half.
