Monthly Meeting
Perry AARP Hears
Important Program
Perry Chapter No. 1744
of the American
Association of Retired
Persons had a program
on cardiovascular
Health at the monthly
meeting, held Tuesday
night, April 11 at the
agricultural building.
Moody Mulkey, program
chairman, presented a
film, "Without Warning"
which showed the torms
of cardiovascular
disease to be high blood
pressure atheros
clerosis, heart attack,
stroke, and congestive
heart failure.
The above diseases
cause more deaths in the
United States each year
than all torms of cancer
and other leading killer
diseases combined, the
film showed. Mrs. Macy
Skinner was the narrator
for the film.
Ken LeVan, chapter
president, introduced Dr.
James Roe, physician
and surgeon, who has
recently moved to Perry
from Pittsfield, Mass. Dr.
Roe was the resource
person to answer
questions on car

Col. Houston P. Houser,
a military leader with
close ties to Perry and
Houston County, recently
assumed command of the
Ist Brigade, Ist Infantry
Division at Ft. Riley,
Kansas.
Col. Houser is the son of
Col. (retired) and Mrs.
H.P. Houser Jr. of Perry,
who are now residing at
Daytona Beach, Fla. He
is also the nephew of
Louise and Lenora
Houser of Perry.
He is a 1957 graduate of
the U.S. Military
Academy. In addition, he
has completed the In
fantry Officers Basic and
Advanced Courses, U.S.
Army Command and
General Staff College,
U.S. Army War College
and holds a Masters
Degree in public ad
ministration from
Shippensburg State
College.
He has commanded a
diovascular health. Mrs.
Edith Rossier and Mrs.
Barbara Ellison,
registered nurses, con
ducted a blood pressure
screening at the con
clusion of the program.
A pamphlet titled, "An
Older Person's Guide to
Cardiovascular Health"
published by the
American Heart
association in co
operation with the NRTA
and AARP, was
distributed.
At the close of the
meeting, refreshments
were served by the
committee composed of
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas
Mayo, Mrs. Eleanor
Mayo, Mr. and Mrs.
George Malone, Mrs.
Margaret Hamilton, and
Mrs. Jessie Hardy.
The Perry chapter will
be hosts to a cluster
workshop of several
chapters on Thursday,
May 4, at the Holiday Inn
in Perry. Mrs. Aurelia
Evans, assistant state
director of the AARP,
will be in charge of this
meeting.

At VSC
"From Rags to
Riches", the Aurand
Harris musical
melodrama based on
Horatio Alger tales, is to
be the spring offering of
the Valdosta State
College Children's
Theatre, according to Dr.
Michael Richey, VSC
Theatre director. The
play opened last Friday
in VSC's lab theatre, 221
Fine Arts Building, it is to
run on succeeding
Saturdays at 2 p.m.
through May 13.
"It is a delightful romp,
which I have seen en
thrall adult audiences as
well as children," Richey
said.
"Stylistically, we are
producing it as a moving
comic strip, using
costumes designed by
Rosemary Johnston of
the Gainesville
Children's Theatre.
Among players
featured in the play are
Terry Smith of Marietta
as one of the Keystone
Cops and Sally Thompson
of Colquitt and Jody
Watts of Perry as The
Ladies, who sing
throughout the play.

Augsburg, Germany and
served as commander of
the 2nd Battalion, 36th
Infantry in Kirchgons,
Germany. His Vietnam
service includes duties as
the operations officer of
the Ist Brigade, 101st
Airborne Division and
battalion executive of
ficer of the 3rd Battalion,
506th Infantry. He also
commanded a Special
Forces detachment
during a tour of duty in
Vietnam.
In Washington, D.C.,
Col Houser has served in
the office of the Deputy
Chief of Staff for
Operations and in the
office of the Assistant
Secretary of Defense.
His awards and
decorations include the
Silver Star Medal,
Defense Superior Service
Medal, Bronze Star
Medal, Air Medal,
Meritorious Service
Medal and the Combat
Infantryman's Badge.
Col Houser and his wife
Suzanne, have two
daughters - Cynthia Sue
and Stephanine Lynn.

National Dean's List.
Dean Crider said that
he has been notified that
Melanie Sue Riner of
Perry will be listed in the
1978 edition.
