CHAMBER V-ff
REPORT
L By Ann C ° nner
As you have read Grant
Plaza has been re-named.
It's now K-Mart Plaza
and the K-Mart Store will
be having their Grand
Opening on Thursday,
August 3rd. We - at the
Chamber - look forward
to welcoming them into
our area, and are glad
they chose our com
munity to locate one of
their stores. One of the
first things they did after
moving inventory and in
the midst of all that
Tuggle Named Chairman
Ducks Unlimited
Group Will Be
Formed In Perry
A local chapter of
Ducks Unlimited, the
international waterfowl
conservation group, is
being formed, following a
preliminary organ
izational meeting
held by group of local
sportsmen. Dan Denton,
Regional Director for DU
National Headquarters,
visited our city especially
for the meeting and to
assist in the formation" of
this new Ocmulgee
chapter.
Ducks Unlimited is a
non-profit membership
organization of over
250,000 members,
dedicated to the con
servation of waterfowl as
a valuable natural
resource. Funds raised in
the U.S. and Canada
through tax-deductible
membership con
tributions are utilized to
construct and
rehabilitate waterfowl
nesting habitat north of
the U.S. Canada border,
where 4 out of every 5
ducks and geese are
hatched. Hundreds of
species of wildlife in
cluding fish, furbearers
and other mammals call
DU water control
projects home.
By law, our govern
ment cannot expend duck
stamp funds outside the
U.S.; thus, DU stands as
the only agency which
can spend private funds

confusion was to join the
Chamber. They were so
eager that they sought us
out not waiting for our
membership commiftee
to move.
We've had an op
portunity to meet some of
their personnel, and they
are an active, energetic
group that are sincerely
interested in our com
munity. Gary Hall,
manager of she new
store, has just moved to
to perpetuate our
waterfowl populations by
improving the vital
breeding grounds in
Canada. Over its 40-year
history, DU has spent
over 56 million dollars --
and has created or
stabilized more than 2.6
million valuable acres of
habitat. The organization
buys no land, receiving
free leases from
governments, lan
downers, industries and
municipalities. A large
percentage of the DU
effort has been made
in the duck-rich Prairie
Provinces of Alberta,
Saskatchewan and
Manitoba; expansion
programs are continuing
in the Maritime
Provinces, Quebec and
British Colulmbia.
Last year Georgia
conservationists con
tributed a total of $247,000
to Ducks Unlimited. The
formation of this new
Ocmulgee chapter is
expected to make a
significant increase in
this figure. Named as
chairman of the local
chapter is Bobby Tuggle
of Perry. All sportsmen
conservationists who
would like to join Ducks
Unlimited or want ad
ditional information are
invited to contact Mr.
Tuggle at Tuggle &
Jennings Insurance
Agency at 987-1951.

their home for a few
years. Gary is a
Southerner having been
born in Little Rock,
Arkansas, and he fits
right in to Perry eager to
get things moving.
As you know, that
52,000 square foot
building has been empty
for over two years, and
has really been a drain on
our economy, and
especially, on those store
owners in that shopping
center. It's hard to
believe after all those
months of rumors and
speculations that K-Mart
really is here. When you
think of the convenience
as well as the dollars it
will put back into our
community, we certainly
are fortunate to have
them here. They are a
real community minded
business providing 60 or
so jobs for Perryans, and
this too is a plus for our
area. We look forward to
the Grand Opening, and
seeing you there.
Glenn McGee, Holiday
Inn, has been appointed
as the new Chairman of
our Tourist and Con
vention Committee.
Along with routine
requests and in
formation, this com
mittee is working with
the Hotel-Motel Tax
Commission on a full
color brochure - "Perry-
The Crossroads of
Georgia'' - as of this date
the transparencies have
been taken, and after
selection they will be sent
to the printers.
As you have read, The
American Camellia
Society (ACS) joint
meeting will be in
November bringing
several hundred people
into our area for several
days. Our Tourisf
Committee has worked
closely with the Middle
Georgia Camellia Society
and the ACS on planning
reservations and ac
tivities during their stay.
We look forward to
hosting this event, and
feel fortunate that they
chose Perry to have their
meeting.

Andy Young’s World
A meeting of the
nation's black mayors
issued a statement last
week supporting UN
Ambassador Andrew
Young's remarks that
there are ''political
prisoners'' in the United
States.
The black mayors even
condemned the
reprimand of Young by
President Carter for
making the remark and
attempted to offer
examples of what they
considered to be
"political prisoners."
The examples, such as
they were, totaled less
than 50 persons.
Other black leaders
and writers have
similarly come to
Young's defense. And in
defending him, they too
have felt obliged to
justify his remarks about
"political prisoners."
Herein lies the deeper
mischief of Young's
words. That he actually
said his nation holds
"hundreds, perhaps
thousands of political
prisoners'' was
disastrous in its timing in
light of the nation's es

If you haven't made
plans to go to see the
Warner Robins Little
Theater's production of
"To Kill A Mockingbird"
then make your plans
now. The play runs
through Saturday night at
the Warner Robins Civic
Center.
This is one play that
you will definitely want to
see. It is based on Harper
Lee's best selling novel
about her childhood
experiences growing up
in Alabama. The director
is Ralph Pace who is one
of the best directors in
our area. He has

book had been in his
possession for almost 35
years. This Bible had
been left to him by his
aunt, a portion of whose
will read: “To my
beloved nephew, I will
and bequeath my family
Bible and all it contains,
with the residue of my
estate, after my funeral
expenses and just and
lawful debts are paid."
The residue of the
estate amounted to a few
hundred dollars. When
this money was gone, the
nephew lived on a
meager income and later
grew too old to work. All
this time, the Bible that
his aunt had willed him
was left unopened. Only
by accident one day did
he discover the money,
but only after living in
dire poverty for most of
his life.
The Bible is without
value unless its pages are
opened, read, and ap
propriated. It is then that
it gives light to life. There
is with most of us a
problem that we too often
neglect the Bible and
seldom read it. How do

forts to help dissidents in
the Soviet Union, and to
emphasize the difference
in the treatment of
dissent by Communist
dictatorships and
western democracies.
Obviously it was
disconcerting to have the
nation's ranking
diplomat, the UN am
bassador, imply that
there really isn't much
difference.
But more importantly -
and somewhat over
shadowed in the
hullabaloo -- is that
Andrew Young really
BELIEVES what he said,
in his heart and mind he
perceives little distinc
tion in the Soviet treat
ment of dissidents and
the jailing in this country
of an arsonist or a bank
robber who also might
not like the way the
country is run.
And apparently the
black mayors conference

the United States and that
there is little difference in

having an entire town on

that he can do it. His
ability to create is
amazing.

meaningful Bible study?
How do I begin?
I can start with a
resolve to be regular in
my Bible reading. Just
about any church will
have pamphlets which
will suggest passages for
daily Bible study, and
they will gladly furnish
these. Many will also
offer guides for reading
through the entire Bible
in a year or two.
The next step is the
budgeting of time. We all
get 24 hours a day, but we
decide how those hours
are to be used. Only if I
set a definite time (and
stick to it) will I continue
with the study.
As I read, I will come
upon many things which I
do not understand. My
pastor or a Christian
friend can be of help
here; and I can pray
directly to God for
wisdom, as promised in
James 1:5.
Two little girls were
discussing their families.
“Why does your grand
mother read the Bible so
much?" asked one.
Replied the other: “I
think she's cramming for
her finals."
This is a Distressing
revelation in a nation
where dissent is tolerated
almost to the point of
anarchy. It is distressing
when criminals can label
themselves terrorists
believe that gives them
the right to murder, rob
and destroy in the name
of some "cause" and if
caught and jailed to
regard themselves as
"political prisoners."
Andrew Young has fed
the kind of mindless
reasoning that produces
the Red Brigades of Italy
and the other terrorist
groups now rampaging in
the world.
But his statement also
served to remind us that
the United States is still
sharply polarized bet
ween white and black, in
1978 as in 1878. No
responsible black leader
felt he could dispute
Young. Indeed many
openly supported him,
even though he clearly
had committed a blunder
which would have
brought dismissal from
his post - except for the
fact that he is black.
Consider the difference

For you movie buffs,
August is going to be a
great month. "Sergeant
Pepper's Lonely Heart's
Club Band" is already
with us. I haven't seen it
yet but I hear that the
movie is less than the
soundtrack album. What
sounds good on the album
doesn't look so great on
the screen. Coming up in
August will be Chevy
Chase and Goldie Hawn
in "Foul Play". This one
is getting great reviews.
They are even comparing
it to the best of ALFRED
Hitchcock. Goldie Hawn
is one of my favorites and
Chevy Chase has a lot of
potential. I look forward
to the movie.
Another one coming out
in August that I look
forward to seeing is "The
Eyes of Laura Mars".
Faye Dunaway is the star
of this suspense film that
is supposed to be one of
the most frightening and
terrifying of the year. It
is produced by Jon Peters
who made "A Star Is
Born" with Barbra
Streisand and Ms.
Streisand sings the title
song in this one. It looks
like a biggie.
With all of these good
movies coming out we
definitely do need a
movie theater in Perry. I
was thrilled to death to
read in last week's paper
that Georgia Theater had
shown some interest.
Come on down.
I received my in
vitation in the mail this
week to go to the seventh
annual Capricorn picnic.
This will be my first time
to attend and I can't wait.
I have been listening to
all of the Capricorn ar
tists like Stillwater, Sea
Level, Marshall Tucker
and Bonnie Bramlett. I
hope that they are all
there and do some im
promptu music. I'll let
you know all about it.
prompt and harsh
dismissal of Gen. John
Singlaub for statements
which were far less
destructive of the
national purpose than
those Young made.
Young, like Singlaub, is
a "soldier” of the United
States, and indeed he is in
a much more sensitive
position than an army
general.
But It Was Naive to
think that Carter would
dismiss Young or that he
would accept Young's
resignation. Such a move
would only worsen the
polarization of whites and
blacks. It also was not a
politically feasible op
tion.
Rep. Davis Scott of
Atlanta, a black
legislator, put the
situation in plain and
simple terms. "Young's
resignation could be
Carter's Waterloo -
reducing him to being a
one term president."
And Os Course,
dismissal or resignation
would only reaffirm
Young's belief in the
wrong-headed but deep
seated ideas he holds, and
which apparently are
held by many if not most
blacks.
As Young noted once,

communism."
Communists have

Why is It that some
authors are categorized
as trash authors no
matter what they write?
Do you know what I
mean? Regardless of
sexual content in their
stories Arthur Hailey,
Harold Robbins and
Irving Wallace are
generally referred to In
passing as "trash"
authors.
Three times out of four
when I ask someone what
they have read lately and
it is a book by one of these
authors, they will act
apologetic for having
read it. Where this
snobbism about reading
material comes from I
don't know. Anyway the
pointtoall of this is that a
new writer's name has
been elevated - or
lowered - to this group of
authors. His name is
Sidney Sheldon.
Sidney Sheldon wrote
The Naked Face and A
Stranger In The Mirror,
but he is best known as
the author of 'The Other
Side Os Midnight. That
trash novel was the basis
for a trash movie that
was one of the big
grossers of 1977. If you
are one of the thousands
who read it then you know
that it was exceptionally
easy to read and it was a
most entertaining novel.
It held your attention

He considers the main
threat to freedom as the
white man's rule of
colored peoples,
especially in Africa, and
if the new black rulers
are communists that does
not really bother Andrew
Young. What's important
is that blacks gain control
of the African nations,
whatever the subsequent
results.
Jimmy Carter,
Perhaps better than his
growing number of
critics, recognizes that
his real need is not to

them from places of

and to teach them the
difference in the jailing of
people who break the law
and people who merely

Andrew Young should
consider what might have
happened If Andre
Gromyko, the Soviet
ambassador to the UN,
had said his nation holds
"thousands of political
prisoners". How /nuch
support would Gromyko
have gotten back home?
How long would he have
kept his job - or his life?
There are several at
tempts made on her life
and this man could be the
one trying to have her
killed. There is an
assortment of minor
characters who also
interweave into her story.
The suspense of the plot
plus Sheldon's liberal
dosage of sexual content
make it a natural for the
best seller lists.
Sheldon also has the
unique quality of making
his characters live as you
read about them.
Elizabeth Roffe and Rhys
Williams become people
with pasts, presents and
futures. You learn their
thoughts and their
motivations and you
learn to enjoy their story.
Maybe I am just a
hopeless trash addict but
this is all that I ask from
a novel. I guess that that
is why I read all of
Robbins, Wallace, Halley
and Sheldon's books.
They entertain me and
give me pleasure. Even
at 444 pages you can
speed through this one
like you are an Evelyn
Woods honor graduate.
So if you want a novel
that will give you some
summer entertainment
without being too heavy,
read Bloodlines. It is
Sidney Sheldon at hls best
and he has come a long
way since he produced "I
Dream of Jeannie" for
television. The movie
rights have already been
sold so get an advance on
the film by reading the
novel. You can cast the
movie in your mind.
Bloodlines won't win
