I Westfield Dominates In Season

| Lidlifter Against Robert Toombs | .
Persistence and
teamwork earned the
Westfield Hornets a 14-12
victory over the Robert
Toombs Crusaders on a
hot and humid field in
their season opener at
Lyons last Friday night.
And the teamwork paid
oft with quarterback
Greg Gentry's spirited
sweep for one touchdown,
halfback Donny
Arrington's rack and
pinion power drive
through the middle tor
another, tailback Bill
O'Neal's true toe and 126
yards rushing, and guard
Eric Griffin's 14 bone
jarring tackles.
''l feel like we com
pletely dominated the
ball game except for two
big plays," Hornet Coach
Marvin Arrington said.
"I'm talking about our
fumble on our five in the
third quarter, and the 65-
yard punt return by
Toombs in the fourth.
Both plays set up their
touchdowns."
After winning the coin
toss, Darryl Duckworth
took the Crusader's
kickoff and galloped back
to the Hornets 36. With
11:30 remaining, in the
first quarter, O'Neal
grabbed Gentry's fluid
handoff and drove to the
five.
After O'Neal plunged to
the two and half, Gentry
faked a handoff and
swept right end tor his
team's first score with
10:33 remaining in the
first stanza.
With Matt Jerles
holding, O'Neal's kick hit
the right upright, and fell

across for the point after,
"We knew we were
going in with proven
veterans not dressing
out," Coach Arrington
said. "Gene Moreland,
Jim McKinney and Chuck
Kezar were injured and
unable to play, so we

with them not dressed
out.
"We just don't have the
depth to have players of
this calibre not play.
O'Neal was nursing a
Charlie horse, and it
flared up during the
game. We had to go with
inexperienced men in the
backfield during the
second half primarily.
"There's no doubt
about it, they won the
second halt and we won
the first. Our inex

were the kind of mistakes
that are not uncommon."
The Hornets' second
touchdown was set up
when Rex Ellis grabbed a
Crusader punt at the
Toombs 25 and ran it
back to the 18. From
there, Arrington picked
up four to the 14, David
Washington tried right
end for no gain, and
Gentry plowed up to the
10 on third and seven.
With a fourth and one
situation, Duckworth
drove to the five for first
and five. Arrington then
moved the Hornets to the
one foot line.
On the next play,
Gentry reeled off the
signals and made a quick
handoff to Arrington, who
plunged straight ahead
for the score with 1:23
remaining in the half.
O'Neal added the point
after, and the Hornets
were out front 14 0.
The Hornets' prospects
for an easy night were
spoiled in the second half
when Toombs quar
terback Mark Alexander
sprinted four yards for a
Crusader touchdown with
3:34 remaining in the
third quarter after
Toombs had recovered a
Westfield fumble at
Westfield's 10.
The Crusader's try for
a two point conversion
failed, but their second
scoring opportunity came
with 10:57 remaining in
the fourth when
Alexander caught a
Westfield punt and ran 55
yards for six more. The

The Crusader's final
scoring opportunity was
cut short when Jerles
intercepted an Alexander

With 1:27 remaining in
the game, Arrington hit
the middle of the line for
no gain, and Genfry
carried to the Toombs 49
to set up third and five.
With 17 seconds
remaining, the Hornets
stayed in the huddle as
their fans counted out the
clock.

Coach Arrington said
the only way to describe
Westfield's game with
Baker of Hawkinsville to
be played in Perry
tomorrow night is "t-u-f
--f."
The coach said Baker
beat Gordon Ivey 23-6 at
Gordon last Friday night.
He said Baker's quar
terback, Jeff Taylor, ran
for two scores and passed
for another. He added
that Baker also has a
strong running back in
Bill Kinard.
"Offensively, they run
out of the slot and wing
formations," Arrington
said. "Defensively, the go
with five on the line and
three linebackers."
Coach Arrington
disclosed that end Rex
Ellis was hospitalized
Monday as a result of
infernal injuries
sustained during the
game with Robert
Toombs.
He said tests were
being conducted to
determine the extent of
Ellis' injuries.
