More Veterans Now
Eligible For
"Wheelchair” Home
Grants - Thanks largely
to the efforts of a Georgia
Congressman, more
disabled veterans whose
disabilities are service
connected will now be
entitled to grants from
the Veterans Ad
ministration for
specially - adapted
housing to meet their
individual needs.
Georgia Commissioner
of Veterans Affairs Pete
Wheeler praised
Congressman Jack
Brinkley who authored
the legislation enacted by
the congress extending
eligibility for so-called
"wheelchair homes" to
veterans who have in
curred "the loss or loss of
use of one upper and one
lower extremity...."
Prior to the enactment
of this latest legislation,
the degree of disability
required was "the loss or
loss of use of both lower
extremities, such as to
preclude locomotion
without the aid of braces,
crutches, canes or
wheelchairs; or blindness
in both eyes, having only
light perception, plus the
loss or loss of use of one
leg with residuals of
organic disease or injury
which precludes
locomotion without the
use of a wheelchair."
Eligible veterans may
receive VA grants up to
50 percent of the cost of
their homes up to a
maximum of $25,000.
Wheeler said legislation
now pending would in
crease this maximum to
$30,000.
These grants may be

cost of building or buying
such homes, or to
remodel existing
dwellings to meet a
veteran's specific
requirements. The grants
also may be used to pay
off the indebtedness of
such homes already
acquired by eligible
veterans.
Since 1948, when this
benefit was first
established, more than
15,275 veterans have been
aided by these grants.
