History Os Women’s Work
Presented At UMW Meeting
A review of the history
of the women's work of
the Methodist Church of
the South Georgia Con
ference during the past
100 years was presented
Monday afternoon at the
November meeting of the
United Methodist Women
of the Perry church. The
presentation was made
through slides of the
pictures of conference
presidents and a
narration of the
achievement of each
one’s administration.
W.K. Whipple made the
slides and Mrs. Dan
Britton, local president,
was the narrator. The
history was researched
and compiled in part by
Mrs. Ruby C. Hodges,
church historian.
The women’s con
ference was organized in
Perry December 15, 1879.
The first president was
Mrs. J.B. Cobb of Macon,
the former Alice Culler of
Perry, daughter of Dr.

Only one other woman
connected with Perry has
been conference
president of the women’s
work, known for years as
the Woman’s Missionary
Society. She was Mrs.
George C. Nunn, the
former Miss Bessie
Houser, who was a
missionary to China prior
to her marriage. As Mrs.
Nunn’s picture appeared
on the screen, her son,
George Francis Nunn,
sang one of her poems,
“Supplication” to the
music, “None But The
Lonely Heart”. Mrs. Joe
McNutt, pianist, ac
companied Mr. Nunn.
Mrs. Thomas Johnson,
vice-president, in
troduced the program
through her report on the
recent annual meeting of

October 14, at Dawson,
Georgia, presented the
certificate given to the
Perry unit for a ten
percent increase in
membership this year.
Mrs. Robert McNeill is
membership chairman of
the Perry group.
Mrs. David Pierce, co
ordinator of Social In
volvement, reported that
the Perry unit voted in
favor of the charter for
Racial Justice.
The annual Pledge
Service was conducted by
Mrs. Woodrow Gilbert,
treasurer.
An attractive worship
center arranged by Mrs.
Britton held a drawing of
the Perry Presbyterian
Church where the
women’s conference was
organized while the

preacher’s annual
meeting was being held in
the Methodist Church.
This design of the old
church, which stood
across Carroll Street
from the Methodist
Church for years, was
made by Mrs. Steve
Pace. Other items on the
table were praying
hands, a collection of old
Bibles, and a lighted
candle. On each side were
posters displaying he
various emblems of the
women’s work as it
changed from Woman’s
Missionary Society to
Woman’s Society of
Christian Service and
Wesleyan Service to
United Methodist
Women.
Another table held
manuscript posters
depicting the history of
the organization. These
were made by Miss
Frances Hall. Other

The president an
nounced that the ob
servance of the cen
tennial of the Perry
Women’s group would be
held Monday, December
lOat 3:45 p.m. and at 7:30
p.m. at the church. The
Perry auxiliary, as it was
called in 1879, was
organized at the same
time as the women’s
conference.
The United Methodist
Women of the Americus
district will observe this
100th anniversary with a
tea Saturday, December
15, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the
Fellowship Hall of of the
Perry United Methodist
Church. The Perry
Church women are in
vited to attend this tea.
