Hornets To Battle FPD For North Ga« Title

will do battle with the
First Presbyterian
Vikings in Perry on

Lil 9 Stingers Finish
Season With Mark
The 1979 football season
was a good one for
Westfield's Lil* Stingers
as they completed a 4-2
season. Thirty-three
football players from the
sixth, seventh and eighth
grades composed the Lil’
Stingers now in its
seventh year.
Last Thursday night,
the Stingers defeated
Baker Academy,
Hawkinsville 46-12. Baker
had previously forfeited a
game. In two meetings
with Fullington Academy
the Stingers won 36-6 and
34-6. Their two losses
were to First
Presbyterian, Macon 20-8
and 28-14.

Chip Washington, this
year’s Stingers lived up
to the Westfield football
reputation as hard hitters
and battlers. He added
that there were several
standout players in each
game but the season was
stamped by a total team
effort. Every player
made an important
contribution to a winning
season. Fifteen eighth
graders will graduate to
the varsity.

The Hornets claimed
the undisputed Region 3-
AA title by winning all
four of their region
Pritchett, Rodney Bogue,

Thames and Jeff Brett.

Kevin Dent, Pat Muse,
Mason Brazelle, Tim

overall season record of
7-1-2. The Vikings
became region champs
by winning all of their
region games, and by
posting a season record of
M-l.
A record crowd is
expected at the Hornets
Nest when the two teams
clash for the second time
this year. The Vikings
defeated the Hornets 14-0
in a non-region game in
Perry on Oct. 26.
Jim O’Neal, president
of the Westfield Quar
terback Club, urged all
Westfield fans this week
to plan to attend the big
game and support their
team.
O'Neal said all tickets
will sell for $3, and that
there would be no ad
vance tickets.
Hornets Head Coach
Marvin Arrington said he
is optimistic about the
rematch with the Vikings
because he believes his
entire team will be
healthy and ready to play
next Wednesday.
Winner of the contest
will play either Savannah
Christian or Deerfield
Academy for the state
championship at a date to
be determined later.
Savannah Christian and
Deerfield will play for the
South Georgia Cham
pionship on Friday, Nov.
23.
“I feel like the Vikings
are going to stay with the
same things they’ve been
doing all year,” Coach
Arrington said. “But I
feel like they will put in
something special in their
offensive and defensive
schemes for an important
game like this one.”
Coach Arrington said
the Vikings are coached
by Bobby Brown, and
that they have talented
olavers at every position.
He said the offense is led
by quarterback Johnny
Mitchell, and running
back Mike Wilson, a
190. pound junior.
He said the offensive
line is led by tackles
Steve Jones, a 195-pound
junior and Mark Morgan,
a 245-pound senior. The
Hornets coach said the
Vikings are led defen
sively by linebacker
Tommy Raye, a 165-
pound junior, and tackle
Bruce Haygood, a 195-
pound sophomore who is
6’7” tall.

O’Neal Rushes For 148 Yards
Westfield Clips Colts
For Region 3AA Title

The tenacious West
field Hornets became
region champs in Gray
last Friday night by
defeating the Jonesco
Academy Colts 21-7.
Victory over the Colts
gave the Hornets a
perfect 4-0 record in
region play and a 7-1-2
slate overall. As un
disputed SEAIS Region 3-
AA champions, the
Hornets will play the
First Presbyterian
Vikings of Macon
Region 2-AA champs --
for the North Georgia
title.
The game with First
Presbyterian will be
played at Westfield on
Nov. 21, with the kickoff
scheduled for 8 p.m.
Winner of the game on
Nov. 21 will pay either
Savannah Christian or
Deerfield Academy for
the state championship.
The battle for the state
title will be played at the
home field of the winner
of the game between
Westfield and First
Presbyterian.
Reports from the
Westfield campus in
dicate the Hornets are

that handed them their
only loss during this
year’s regular season.
The Vikings defeated the
Hornets 14-0 on Oct. 26 in
Perry.
In reflecting on the
final game Jonesco,
Hornets Head Coach
Marvin Arrington
praised Bill O’Neal for
gaining 148 yards on 24
carries, and Darryl
Duckworth for moving
the ball 50 yards on 14
carries.
Citing another fine
offensive play, Coach
Arrington mentioned the
23-yard touchdown pass
quarterback Cater Pierce
threw to end Gene
Beckham.
Defensively, Arrington
lauded Eric Griffin for
making 13 tackles and
Bill Blackstock for
making 8. In commenting
on other top defensive
plays, the coach men
tioned Lewis Shelton for a
fumble recovery, and
Phillip Washington and
John Milligan for in
tercepting one pass each.
The first touchdown of
the game was claimed by
Jonesco with 3:04
Sports—
remaining in the first
quarter. The score came
when the Hornets fum
bled at pitchout in the end
zone. The fumble was
recovered by lonesco’s
Randy Herndon, and
Chris Ward kicked the
point after.
Behind 7-0, the Hornets
scored when O'Neal
rammed Colt defenders
from the one-yard
marker and crossed the
goal line with 10 seconds
left in the first stanza.
The touchdown had been
set up on a 47-yard run by
O’Neal, the game’s
leading rusher.
Pierce kicked the extra
point to lock the score at
7-7. The Hornets scoring
drive covered 90 yards in
five plays from scrim
mage.
The Hornets again
regained possession of
the ball late in the second
quarter after taking a
Colt punt on their own 49.
After gaining a first down
on the Colt 27, Duckworth
picked up 3 yards to the
24, O’Neal tried the
middle of the line on 2nd
and 7, but was thrown for
a loss back to the 25.
Duckworth gained two
to bring up 4th and 6. On

the 4th down play, Pierce
cocked his arm and
tossed a 23-yard touch
down pass to Beckham
with 3:31 remaining in
the half. Pierce again
kicked the point after,
and the Hornets were
ahead 14-7.
The Hornets final score
came in the fourth
quarter following 14 plays
that moved them from
their own 34. On the final
scoring series, O’Neal
picked up a first down at
lonesco’s 17. lohn
Milling carried to the 11
to bring up 2nd and 4, and
O’Neal gained to the 5 for
another first down.
Duckworth plowed to
the Colt 3, where O’Neal
crossed into the end zone
with 5:13 left in the game.
Pierce’s too was accurate
enough to kick his third
PAT, and produce
Westfield’s final 21-7
margin of victory.
