‘Breaking Away’ May Just Be
A Very Minor Masterpiece
“Breaking Away” has
been described as a
minor masterpiece.
Make that minor, minor,
minor, minor. That isn’t
to say it isn’t a good
movie, but a master
piece. Not at all. It is a
small budget, no name
cast, no frills movie about
the time of life between
graduation from high
school and growing up. It
is the story of growing
apart from high school
cliques and breaking
away from our life at
home.
The film is basically
“Rocky” like as it
characterizes the
struggle of a young man
to become a champion
bicycle rider. The
ultimate conflict comes
in a contest between the
college students and the
townies. Our hero Dave
(Dennis Christopher) is a
townie.
The early part of the
film highlights Dave’s
attempts to impress a
college co-ed (Robin
Douglas) by pretending
to be Italian born and

This is the week that
“Annie” starts in
Atlanta. This show which
is one of America’s
favorites will be
presented at the Atlanta
Civic Center through
December 8.1 plan to see
it this week and will have
news of whether it is good
or bad for you next week.
The only actor in the
play that I am familiar
with is Harve Presnell
who is playing Daddy
Warbucks. Presnell is
best known for his role as
"Johnny” in the movie
version of “The Un
sinkable Molly Brown”.
He has a tremendous
voice so he should be good
in this role.
Ticket prices range
from $6.00 to $15.00 and
can be obtained by
calling 252-8960. “Annie”
Is. still running on
Broadway and playing to
full houses. This is your
chance to see a little of
Broadway in our area.
I’m sure “Annie” will be
well worth the trip to
Atlanta.
Also opening in Atlanta
on November 28 is
“Oliver". This show,
another of my favorites,
is being presented at the
Alliance Theater. I need
to move to Atlanta for a
week so I can see
everything going on
there. There are three
movies being screened
there this week • "Tom
Horn” with Steve
McQueen, “Promises In
the Dark" with Marsha
Mason, and “Just Tell
You What You Want”
with Ali McGraw.
Locally you can wait
until December 2 to
become cultured when we
have our classical
guitarist come to town, or
you can get a headstart
and go to see Daniel
Blumenthal in concert at
Macon Junior College.
Blumenthal is an ac

bred. This sudden change
of nationality causes his
parents Paul Dooley
and Barbara Barrie) no
end of consternation.
As the film progresses
Dave drifts in and out of
the close relationship he
had with his high school
buddies. Mike (Dennis
Quaid) can’t accept the
fact that his days of glory
as a high school quar
terback are gone. Cyril
(Daniel Stern) is just
beginning to realize the
limits of his intelligence.
Moocher (Jackie Earle
Haley) is contemplating
marriage to Nancy (Amy
Wright). The closeness of
the four’s relationship is
tested by these various
interests and comes
together for the final time
at the bicycle race.
All of the performances
in the movie are good
with Paul Dooley being
the most outstanding in
his role as Dave’s father.
It should put Dooley’s
career in high gear and
get him some long
deserved recognition. He
has been around a long
complished pianist and
his concert will be
November 27, 8:00 at the
Macon Junior College
Auditorium.
If you are still
searching for something
to do, remember our
Perry movie theater and
the two good movies that
are playing right now.
“Time After Time” and
“Breaking Away" are
both rated "PG” and are
both very good movies.
On Thursday nights the
policy has been started to
allow women in for half
price. Then too, don’t
forget that on Monday
nights everyone gets in
for a dollar. These dollar
nights have certainly
proven to be popular and
I can understand why. A
dollar admission to a
movie is a rare treat.
I have already seen
“Breaking Away” and
“Time After Time" and
you can’t go wrong seeing
either one.
The concert by the
Imperials will be held at
the Warner Robins Civic
Center on Friday,
November 23 at 7:30.
Tickets are $5.50 in ad
vance and $6,50 at the
door. The Imperials are
tremendous entertainers
and should put on a
completely enjoyable
show. Plan to go and
avail yourselves of this
fine Christian en
tertainment.
And as a last reminder,
be thinking about the kids
at Perry High School and
at Westfield who are
working on their one act
plays. Perry High plans
to present their
production of “The
Fantasticks” to the
public on Thursday,
November 29. It is a good
show and one you should
see.
Now don’t any of you
say there isn’t anything
10 do. There is. So do it.

time waiting for the right
role. Dennis Christopher
is almost as good as he
shows the right amount of
juvenile innocence being
balanced with a growing
awareness of the ways of
the world.
The film is rated “PC”
for language, but aside
from this it is suitable for
the entire family. It
starts out a little slow but
