Halliburtons
Hold Reunion
Descendants of Robert
Camp Halliburton (1859-
1932) and Annie Henley
Halliburton (1860-1925)
returned to Houston and
Pulaski Counties during
the weekend of
November 16-17 to visit
the sites where their
forebears lived and died,
to renew family ties, and
to dedicate a monument
placed by them recently
in the old Halliburton
Cemetery on the land
where David Halliburton,
their great-great grand
father, settled in 1824.
The reunion -- first ever
for the Halliburtons - was
the culmination of
months of work by the
Rev. Thomas Halliburton
Johnson in clearing the
entangled wilderness in
and around the cemetery
and in restoring the only
recognizable gravestone
within the ancient
fieldstone wall - that of
David Halliburton’s wife,
Sara, who died in 1846.
Rev. Johnson was
inspired and aided in his
efforts by his cousin,
Evelyn Halliburton
Marshall of Griffin, who
provided historical data,
secretarial help, and
much of the financial aid
needed for the project.
Forty Halliburton
descendants met on
Friday evening,
November 16, in the
social hall of the Perry
United Methodist Church
to get acquainted and to
share recollections of the
days when the
Halliburtons farmed the
land near Klondike, now
owned by the Johnsons’
neighbor, T.R. Tolleson.
On Saturday morning
the group met for a
pilgrimage to the old
cemetery for a brief
service of dedication.
Rev. Johnson’s brother,
Major General (ret.)
George M. Johnson of
Lakeland, Florida, in his
opening remarks,
recalled memorable
events which had taken
place on that land and
expressed appreciation
for the family tradition.
Rev. Johnson, in
speaking on “Why We
Have Gathered”, stated
that it was “to pay our
respect to the past, to re
dedicate this cemetery,
and to dedicate ourselves
to being the best family
possible.”
As the family mem
bers, whose ages spanned
three generations, stood
quietly in the sunlit
autumn morning, Rev.
Johnson told them:
“On this November 17,
1979, when we are
thinking of our heritage,
let us think of the future
and dedicate ourselves to
the very best that we
know, so that those who
come after us will be glad
that we lived.”
Following the unveiling
of the monument whose
inscription reads:
Halliburton Cemetery
Era 1824-1901
Marker placed by
descendants
September 1,1979
the group went to
Hawkinsville for a visit at
the nursing home with
Mrs. Mattie Sinyard who
was married to their
grandfather, Robert
Camp Halliburton, for
nearly two years prior to
his death, and to the
Orange Hill Cemetery
where the Halliburton
grandparents and Henley
forebears are buried.
A luncheon at The New
Perry Hotel concluded
the planned activities for
the reunion. “We have
been overwhelmed by the
response!” Tom Johnson
exclaimed. ‘‘Some of
them are already talking
about having another
one!”
Those who attended the
reunion were:
