Byron Girl Got First
Skates At Her Birth
Her name is Michelle
Marie Bechtel, but to
everyone who frequents
the Lake Joy Roller Rink
she’s “Pooky” —a four
year old pixie whose
golden-blond hair floats
over her shoulders as she
glides around the rink.
When Pooky was 3
hours old she received
her first pair of skates, a
gift from aunt Rose
Crum, owner of the
Roller Rink and
professional skater. At 10
months Pooky learned to
walk and at 12 months she
was walking on skates. It
took a few pair of heavy
socks to fit the size 2 shoe
skates on well, but by age
2, the little Miss Bechtel
was really skating. Now,
at the ripe old age of 4 she
has her skating
proficiency patch and a
second place couples
trophy for Disco Skating.
There may be some
question as to where
Pooky’s talent comes
from. A good case may be
made for it being
heredity, as she has quite
