Health Warning: Pneumococcal
Pneumonia Is Fifth Largest Killer
Why is Massachusetts one
of the few states taking a
major stand in the fight
against the- nation’s fifth
largest killer pneumonia?
The vaccine now avail
able to help prevent pneu
mococcal pneumonia, the
most common and severe
form of bacterial pneu
monia, is expected to lower
the death rate from this
cause in Massachusetts,
where 130,000 high-risk in
dividuals have already been
vaccinated. But what about
the remaining 60 million
elderly and chronically ill
Americans across our nation
who are candidates for pro
tection? Response in most
other states to the vaccine
has been poor, thus far.
Undoubtedly, many are
not aware of the pneumo
coccal pneumonia vaccine
that comes on the heels of
adverse publicity surround
ing the swine-flu vaccine.
But experience with the
pneumococcal pneumonia
vaccine to date is that it i
has been generally well i
tolerated, though mild re- |
actions at the injection site (
occur commonly, mild fever i
occurs occasionally, and |
serious reactions have been i
reported rarely. The vaccine i
is reported to be highly i
effective in inducing immu- i

Senior Citizens Risk
nity against the bacteria
that cause over 80 per
cent of pneumococcal pneu
monia cases in the U.S.
Furthermore, this is not
a vaccine for “every man,
woman and child m Ameri
ca.” Only those over 50,
and particularly over 65, or
with a chronic debilitating
disease such as bronchitis,
emphysema or congestive
heart failure, arc considered
to be at high risk from
pneumococcal pneumonia.
Others who should receive
the vaccine include those
with sickle cell disease and
asplenia (surgical removal
of the spleen). All these
patients have increased sus
ceptibility to the compli
cations of pneumococcal
pneumonia. Patients, of 1
course, are advised to con
sult with a doctor to deter
mine whether the vaccine i
is right for them. i
PAGE 15-B
But high-risk patients in
many states are apparently
not being reached. A recent
editorial in the Journal of
the American Medical Asso
ciation commented on the
low utilization of this new
tool in preventive medicine,
and attributed the problem,
in part, to an apathetic
attitude of the public to
ward vaccinations of all
types.
In addition, many people
have become complacent
about pneumonia as a cause
of death, confident that
penicillin will wipe it out.
This, unfortunately, is not
always the case. In many
cases of pneumococcal
pneumonia, damage done to
the lungs is already so severe
that antibiotics cannot save
the patient. In fact, this
disease causes some 54,000
deaths a year in the U.S,,
according to the Surgeon
General.
The success of the Massa
chusetts program has been
credited mainly to the
awareness and determina
tion of that state’s vocifer
ous senior citizens. Let’s not
forget (hat pneumococcal
pneumonia is still a serious
disease...one that can now
often be prevented.
The oldest living trees in
the world are believed to be
the bristle cone pines of
California, some of which
are estimated to be
some 4,600 years old.
