In the last ten years, the
taxes America’s corpora
tions have paid to the fed
eral government have nearly
doubled, reaching —govern
ment figures show —nearly
S7O billion in 1979. Fortu
nately, some people can
help keep their companies
from paying any more taxes
than they have to by being
up on the latest information
and equipment.
At least through 1980, for
instance, the credit against
tax liabilities for investment
in depreciable personal
property (such as a com
pany car) is ten percent. If
the company establishes an
employee stock-ownership
plan meeting certain cri
teria, another one percent
can be taken. An additional
half percent credit can be
taken if employee contribu
tions to such a plan match
the half percent. Unused
credits may be carried over
seven years against tax lia
bilities in those years.
One of the latest tools for
saving on taxes is a small
computer that can help you
make sure your company’s
got its numbers right—while
it helps store its information
in case the IRS wants to
make sure, too. Called the

You and a new macnine may
be able to reduce your taxes.
TRS-80, it’s a microcom
puter made by Radio Shack,
a leading supplier of small,
top-quality computers
through a nationwide chain
of electronics stores. It basi
cally consists of a 12-inch
video display screen, a
53-key professional key
board, a cassette recorder
and a power supply. You
don’t have to be a computer
programmer to use it. A
comprehensive owner’s
manual explains all you
need to know. The manual
takes you from learning the
fundamentals to designing
complete programs. The
price is hardly taxing either,
and it can save your com

money all year long, not
just at tax time.
Os course, that could
contribute to raising your
taxes —by raising your
profits.
