HHJPhotographer Saves Injured Dog
By Phil Byrd
HHJ General Manager
Last Friday was a cold,
drab day in middle
Georgia. In fact, the
clouds that hung
overhead looked as
though they might
unleash rain - or snow,
hopefully -- at any
moment.
Frank Russo, the Home
Journal’s top
photographer, and I had
just completed a photo
assignment in Macon and
were on our way back to
Perry on 1-75. Frank,
complaining about the
Christmas traffic,
switched the con
versation to the weather.
“Wow, wouldn’t it be nice

if we’d get a couple of
inches of snow. We’re a
little short of art work
(pictures ) for next
week’s paper and a few
snow shots would cer
tainly come in handy,”
Frank commented as we
rolled down the “super
slab”. "No chance,” I
answered, "Those clouds
have lingered around all
day, besides, it’s not cold
enough.”
Seconds later, as we
weaved our way through
traffic, Frank spotted an
animal of some sort lying
in the middle of the south
bound lane. As we went
by the prone object,
Frank looked into his
rear view mirror and
In Busy Christmas Traffic On 1-75
awakened my dozing.
“It’s a dog ... and he’s
still alive!”
As cars and trucks
zipped by, Frank slowed
down his 442 Oldsmobile
and brought it to a stop on
the left shoulder of the
road. Peering into the
mirror again, the HHJ
photographer shouted,
"Let’s get him. If we
don’t, he’s going to get
smashed real quick.”
"Better hurry,” I replied.
As Frank backed his
car down the shoulder of
1-75, I held on. "What a
way to go ... getting
creamed by a semi trying
to save a dog’s life. “I
requested Frank to slow
down a bit, but in a
HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1979
matter of seconds we
were there.
The little dog was,
indeed, alive as I viewed
out the passenger side
window. Cars and trucks
swerved left and right to
avoid the frightened
animal, who was almost
directly straddling the
center line.
As two huge Kenworths
bore down on the
defenseless canine, I told
Frank: “He ain’t got a
chance.” But, somehow,
the two professional
drivers maneouvered
their way around the
mutt, and he was still
alive, quivering and
undoubtedly in a state of
shock.
Frank waited im
patiently for a break in
the traffic .... it came
moments later and he
raced to the center of the
highway, picked up the
little dog and scurried to
the side of the road,
where he layed the
bleeding animal down.
“He’s been hit, but I
don’t know how bad,”
Frank observed as I
sighed a breath of relief
to what could have been a
dead dog and an equally
dead photographer.
As we made the dog
more comfortable on the
side of the road, several
cars slowed down. “Is he
all right?” one driver
asked, “Can I be of
help?” said another.
“Everything’s under
control,’’ Frank
responded.
We placed the injured
mutt in the floorboard of
the car and continued
toward Perry. Frank
turned the heater up and
the dog appeared to enjoy
the warm flow of air on
his mostly brown coat.
As we approached
Perry, Frank suggested
that we take him to Dr.
Smith (Dr. Felix Smith of
Smith Animal Hospital).
I concurred.
Mrs. Joan Ogletree,
who works at the
hospital, was there when
we arrived. She took
Immediate care of the
little dog and told Frank
she would keep him

Later that day Mrs.
Ogletree told Frank that
the mutt was going to be
okay, but that they were
going to keep him for a
couple of days for ob
servation.
Friday evening I
phoned the hospital and
Bud Ogletree, who has
three more quarters to go
at Georgia Southwestern
in Americus and works
for Dr. Smith during
breaks, told me that the
canine was "doing okay”.
"He’s got a few bruises

We’re going to keep him

Bud explained.

“Lucky”, for indeed he
was.
As for Frank Russo ....
