'Stretch' C-141
Robins Modifies
Giant Aircraft
Ahead of schedule and
below cost, the first of
Military Airlift Com

Starlifters was accepted
and flown last week to
Charleston AFB, S.C.,
with Gen. Robert Huyser,
MAC commander, at the
controls.
The second “stretch”
model, which was slated
for January delivery,
landed at Robins AFB
Wednesday, Dec. 5.

aircraft which has in
creased its global range

third as a result of adding
in-flight refueling and
lengthening its fuselage
231/2 feet.
Accepting the air
craft’s symbolic ignition
key from Lt. Gen. R.E.
Merkling, vice com
mander, Air Force
Logistics Command,
General Huyser hailed
the program as “a real
bargain.”
He said, This
modification adds airlift
capacity equivalent to an
additional 90 C-141A5.”
He added that the cost is
equal to buying a like
number of C-141s in 1963
dollars.

in a message delivered by
his legislative aide,
Arnold Punaro, “The
added lift capacity, the
global flying range and
the cost-effectiveness of
the stretch program
come at a most opportune
time.
“The need for in
creased strategic airlift
has never been more
evident and important
due to both the new
requirements for
strategic reinforcement
of NATO and the need for
a mobile deployment
force for contingencies
outside NATO.”
The Senator’s message
termed the C-1418 “an
important milestone
back” from what he
called “a decade marked
by decreasing U.S.
defense expenditures and
an increasing erosion of
U.S. capabilities at the
strategic nuclear, tac
tical nuclear, and con
ventional levels..."
Hosting the ceremonies
and turning over the C
-1418, Robert B. Ormsby,
president, Lockheed -
Georgia, called the
program ‘‘the
revitalization of an
already remarkable
machine,” and heralded
the foresight of the U.S.
Air Force and Congress
in developing the
Starlifter.
He said the airplane
represents “some of the
best examples of
‘American can-do’ to be
found."

Ormsby said the 1973
mid-East War demon
strated clearly the
necessity of adequate
airlift.
“Almost one-fourth of
the supplies from the U.S.
to Israel were delivered
by air in the first 33 days;
three-fourths went by sea
... but the first ship
arrived in Israel 10 days
after the cease fire.”
He also pointed out
that, while the C-141
stretch program will not
completely fill the U.S.
airlift deficit, it is a
major step in the right
direction.
Among the dignitaries
on the speaker’s platform
was Secretary of the Air
Force Dr. Hans Mark.
Following the dramatic
pulling-up of the hangar
doors and the official
presentation of the
parked C-1418, General
Spalding and other
general officers and key
“stretch” officials
viewed the 15 C-141Bs on
the aircraft and
modification production
line.
Described as the MAC
“workhorse,” the C-141
first flew in December
1963. Lockheed, which
won the modification
contract in 1978, following
a successful prototype
program, will deliver 80
C-141 Bs in 1980.
The last C-1318 is
scheduled to reach MAC
by mid-1982. This
modification gives the
aircraft a total cargo
capacity of 11,399 cubic
feet.
