A Thank You Column
There are “Thank
You” letters and “Thank
You” notes.
I don’t see why I can’t
do a “Thank You”
column to fill my space in
the Houston Home
Journal this week.
And I guess one of the
first persons I should
thank is Bobby Branch,
the editor, for making the
space available to me.
It may not be as per
sonal as a letter or note,
but it does have an ad
vantage; it enables me to
reach -- or thank - just
about everybody in
Houston County. It would
be impossible for me to
correspond personally
with all the people to
whom I would like to
thank.
A "Thank You” column
in the newspaper is also
appropriate because of
the season. Thanksgiving
was little more than a
month ago. Christmas
holidays are near. And
New Year’s Day is
coming up. If we can’t be
thankful during this time,
I don’t guess we can be
thankful any time.
Something Exciting
What I really want to
thank you for is allowing
me to serve as your
county Extension Service
director another year.
There is just something
exciting about working
for the outfit that has
helped make U.S.
agriculture the most
productive and efficient
industry in the world. I
am proud to be
associated with the
farmers in this county.
They not only do an ex
cellent job of feeding
themselves and their
fellow Americans; they
are so good that they can
ship the production of
every fourth acre

Os course, nobody likes
to be overworked. Thanks
to some loyal and

Not much of the time,

wear for the holidays,
check into sewing with
border prints. They
offer a novel look and you
don’t need a sewing class
to learn how to use them.
Just as the name says,
the border print is a
design or series of pat
terns running down one
selvage (or lengthwise)
edge of the fabric. This
design could be printed,
woven or embroidered.
Your own personal
preferance dictates the
choice of a border print
fabric. Consider the type
and style of the garment
as well as the figure type
when you select the size
of the print.
Pick out a pattern that
is appropriate for a
border print. The ones
more suitable and easier
to work with are patterns
showing the garment in a
border print design.
These patterns will give
special layout in
structions.
If you’re looking at any
other patterns,
remember the pattern
must have a straight
hemline. Avoid A-line and
flared skirts because
curbed hemlines cannot
be placed along the
straight border. Choose a
pattern with few seams
so you won’t have to
worry about matching.
Pattern pieces cannot be
any longer than the width
of the fabric. A floor
length garment must
have a waistline to fit on
a border print fabric.
Professional Look
You wil probably need
extra fabric to use the
pattern with a border
print fabric. If the pat
tern shows a view in a
border print, then the
yardage will allow for the
extra fabric needed. For
a pattern not shown in a

Southern Pine Beetle Hits
Houston County Forestland
Houston County’s
forestland is under attack
by a beetle one-eighth
inch long. This beetle, the
Southern Pine Beetle,
kills pine trees by laying
its eggs inside the bark
and the larvae feed on the
tree's inner bark until the
tree dies from lack of
food.
Forest Ranger Joe
Batchelor reports that a
meeting was held
recently between
representatives of area
forest industries, local
officials and the Forestry
Commission to discuss
methods of controlling
this destructive insect.
Batchelor became
alarmed when aerial
surveillance of the county
showed 71 spots of timber
killed by the beetle.
The only practical
means of stopping the
beetle, Batchelor said, is
to salvage the timber.
Area timber company
representatives agreed to
accept beetle killed
timber providing it hasn’t
begun to decay. It was

border print, you’ll need
to estimate the yardage.
First, determine the
pattern pieces using the
border; then measure
across the widest point of
each piece, allowing for
the pieces to be cut twice;
total these
measurements.
For a professional look,
the secret of sewing with
a border print is in the
pattern layout. All
alterations must be done
on the pattern before the
layout on the fabric. This
includes the length, to
place the border in
correct relationship to
the hemline on the
completed garment.
To prepare for the
pattern layout and cut
ting, unfold the fabric to
form a single layer. Lay
all pattern pieces so that
the lengthwise grainline
arrows run along the
crosswise grain of the
fabric.
An Unbroken Line
First, position the main
pattern pieces on the
border. Most often these
pieces should be placed
with the edge of the
border along the hemline
of skirt and sleeves. That
way, the hemline on the
pattern piece would be
placed just above the
selvage edge of the
fabric. This allows room
for the other pattern
pieces to fit on the rest of
the fabric.
If the fabric has a
dominant motif, position
the motif at the center of
the garment, front and
back. Eliminate seams
when possible. Match the
design at the stitching
line of adjoining pieces.
When you sew the seams,
the border should con
tinue in an unbroken line.
It may take a little
extra time and some
planning, but a garment
made with a border print
will help give you a
striking look for the
season.

The Benefits Os A Mini-Keogh Plan
Arc you a part-time paint

special. And that nestegg
often comes in handy at
retirement lime.
What’s more, you may
qualify for a special plan
that lets you invest for
retirement and get a lax
deduction right away. It’s
called a Mini-Keogh plan.
Here's how it works; if
you’re self-employed and
have a total adjusted gross
income of less than
$15,000, you may con
tribute up to $750 of your
self-employed earnings
every year to a Mini-Keogh
plan. The amount of your
contribution is deducted
from your Federal income
tax. That’s how you save on
taxes immediately.
Salaried people who have
a total adjusted gross in
come of less than $15,000
and who also perform free
lance work- such as artists,
writers, teachers who do
private tutoring may open
a Mini Keogh account for
their freelance earnings.
They can do this even if
they are already covered by
their regular employer's re
tirement program. And
again they get that imme
diate tax deduction!
The money in a Mini-
Keogh is free of taxes until
you withdraw it, usually at
retirement age. You’ll pay

are made. But if you're like
most retirees, you’ll have a
lower income than when
you worked—so pay less

Any income the contribu

Banks, insurance com
panies and mutual funds all
offer these plans. Where you
invest your Mini-Keogh con

when you plan to retire, the
rate of return you’d like and
what kind of risk you’re

of mutual funds, and they
all have different goals.
Some try to keep your
principal as safe as possible
while earning an attractive

return and are riskier. It’s all
up to you.
So even if you don’t earn
much at your self-employed
job or at moonlighting, you

Timber officials
pointed out that due to the

is to put landowners on a

including a 100 foot buffer

Forestry officials noted
that cold weather slows

State forestry officials

If the plan can be

possible.
Ranger Batchelor said
landowners can contact
his office by calling 987-
1921 and obtain a list of
wood cutters in the
county. His office also
has a map showing the
location of the beetle
spots in the county. He
further stated that planes
of the Georgia Forestry
Commission will be
making another aerial
survey of the county in
the near future to check
on the spread of the
beetle and to evaluate
salvage efforts.
He said the last
statewide aerial survey
revealed a 28 county area
heavily hit by the beetles
and there were 11,000
spots picked up involving
approximately 600,000
cords of beetle wood.
Batchelor said the
problem with beetles
causes more of a problem
than fires. If the beetle is
not stopped, the trees
killed could adversely
affect the timber supply
for years to come in the
county. He urged affected
landowners to take im
mediate action.
