HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL, THURSDAY, JANUARY 3, 1980
LOCATION OF SMOKE AND HEAT ALARMS
CAN BE A LIFE AND DEATH MATTER
There’s never been a
better time to make sure
that you and your family
have enough time to get out
of the house in the event
of a fire.
It’s important that you
have a pre-determined es
cape plan that’s rehearsed
every six months with all
family members taking part.
But it’s even more impor
tant that heat and smoke
alarms be strategically
placed throughout the
house to give you as much
advance warning as possible.
One of the most critical
factors in any fire alarm
system is the location and
number of fire-detecting
devices.
According to Robert W,
Limacher, president of
A-T-O Inc.’s Interstate Engi
neering division, manufac
turer of Vanguard residen
tial security systems, the
National Fire Protection As
sociation has established a
standard for installation of
heat and smoke detectors.
“The NFPA standard sets
various levels of pro
tection,” Limacher said.
“While it’s logical to assume
that even partial protection
can provide a degree of life
safety, it should he the goal
of every family to provide
themselves with the highest
level of protection that’s
economically possible.
“These standards are
spelled out in levels —Level

plete protection, and Level
Four providing the mini
mum. You should consider
the life safety involved, and
the level of protection best
suited to you and your
family’s needs,” he said.
Limacher added that you
can select from one of the
following predetermined or
intervening levels. “But you
should never go below Level
Four, of course, because
that means you have no
protection at all.”
Levels One, Two and
Three require installation of
one or more basic smoke
detectors plus additional
heat or smoke detectors ac
cording to the desired level.
Additions for Level One
protection include:
• A basic smoke detector
to protect each sleeping area
and at the head of the
basement stairway.
• Heat or smoke detectors
should also be installed in
all olhe. major areas and
rooms including the living
and dining rooms, bed
rooms, the kitchen, hall
ways, attic, furnace or util
ity room, basement, and the
attached garage.
Level Two, Limacher said,
calls for a basic smoke de
tector to protect each sleep
ing area, with additional
heat or smoke detectors in
the living room, bedrooms,
the kitchen, attic, furnace
or utility room, and the
basement.
To meet the NFPA stan
dard for Level Three protec
tion, your system should
also include a basic smoke
detector to protect each
sleeping area, plus heat or
smoke detectors in the liv
ing room, kitchen, furnace
or utility room, and the
basement.
“No home can be said to
be safe without a minimum
of Level Four protection,”
Limacher emphasized. “This
includes at least one basic
smoke detector in each
sleeping area, and one at the
head of each stairway lead
ing to an occupied area.”
Limacher added these
words of caution: “All
smoke detectors should be
