’Stangs Swat Westfield
Wsetfield’s Hornets
and Hornettes ran into a
rampaging band of
Mustangs Saturday night
in Forsyth and dropped a
pair of games to Jonesco
Academy.
In the opener the
Hornettes could not stop
the duo of Vicki Douthit
and Corrie Balkcom, who
aggragated 37 points, and
lost a 61-42 decision.
Westfield stayed close
in the early stages and
trailed by only three, 13-
10, at the end of the
opening period. But in the
second stanza, the Lady
‘Stangs started to gallop.
By halftime the Monroe
Countians had built their
lead to 30-18 as they
outscored Westfield 17-8
in quarter number two.
Not letting up, the Lady
Mustangs ripped the nets
for twenty points in the
third period, to ten for
Westfield, and took a
commanding 50-28 ad
vantage into the final
quarter. Only one free
throw was shot during the
entire third stanza.
The Hornettes refused
to fold and outgunned the
Lady Mustangs 14-11 in
final eight minutes, but it
was of little solace as the
final tally of 61-42
reflected.
“As a team we did not
look good at all," coach
Hardy said, “We let the
press hurt us and our
offense and defense
wasn’t up to par. It’s hard
to beat anyone with only
half effort."
Westfield made 6 of 11
free throws and com
mitted only 13 team fouls.

Hornets Tripped
The Hornets ran into
the same fate as the
Hornettes in the nightcap
as the Mustangs shook off
the pesky Perryans 62-50.
Westfield and Monroe
battled to a standoff as
the first period expired,
each team with a dozen
points. But in the second
stanza, the Mustangs
began to pull away. Mark
Wilcox banged in 8 of his
game high 22 points in the
quarter to enable the
‘Stangs to possess a 28-2 s
by sweeping a pair of
cage contests from the
Jonesco Colts and Lady
Colts.
In the boys tilt the
advantage at in
termission.
Westfield’s Reid
Meyer, held to only four
points in the first half, led
the Hornet charge in the
third period with 8 tallies,
but Monroe displayed
balanced scoring from
three players - six points
each - and outscored the
visitors 20-14 to make the
count 48-38 with a quarter
remaining.

Hornets overcame a 22-16
first quarter deficit to
defeat the Colls 81-73.
Led by Cater
Pierce’ dozen
near even terms with the
‘Stangs in the final eight
minutes (14-12), but did
not display their usual
firepower and were on
the short end at the
buzzer 62-50,
“We did not play a very
good game against
Monroe," Coach Hardy
stated about the setback,
“We fell back instead of
going forward. Reid
(Meyer) played another
standout game for us.”
HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL. THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 1980
points in the second
stanza, the Hornets
outscored the Colts 25-16
to take a 41-38 advantage
into the lockerroom at
halftime. Perry Stanley,
who finished with a
game-high 23 markers,
added seven points in the
second period comeback.
The third quarter was
all even as each squad

Westfield went into the
final eight minutes still
owning a three point lead,
57-54. Tommy Miller (6),
Pierce (4), Stanley (4)
and Reid Meyer (2)
registered the Hornets’
points.
In the final period the
Hornets burned the nets
for 24 points to off set the

on 12 of 19 free throws to
keep the Colts at bay.
When the final buzzer
sounded, the Hornets
were on the positive side
of the ledger 81-73.
For the night the
Hornets zeroed in on 17 of
28 free throws and were

Hornettes Win
Coach Percy Hardy's
Hornettes had things
their own way in the girls
game as the visitors from
Perry flew away to a 15-2
lead at the initial rest
stop and never looked
back in corralling the
Lady Colts 60-39.
Marion Davidson
provided the spark for the
Hornettes with eight first
quarter points and tacked
on eight more in the
second stanza as they
increased their ad
vantage to 33-13 at
halftime.
Using a combination of
starters and reserves, the
Hornettes were out
scored 15-14 in the third
quarter but still were the
owners of a comfortable
47-28 lead going into the
final eight minutes.
Hardy cleared his
bench in the last period
and the younger Hor
nettes responded ad
mirably by putting 13
more points in lights to
produce the final count of
60-39.
The Davidson sisters
led the Hornette scoring
attack as they combined
for 31 markers.
Westfield’s ladies
canned 12 of 29 free tosses
and were called for 22
team fouls.
"We made a decent
team effort against
Jonesco,” coach Hardy
