“T he Black ”
The Disney studios
answer to "Star Wars" is
on the screen at last. It
has taken several years
and several million
dollars to get it all
together and up there for
your viewing pleasure. Is
it worth it? I think so. It is
pure entertainment and
pure Disney showman
ship. What more could
you ask?
Well you might ask
what a Disney movie is
doing to earn a "PG"
rating. I had heard
earlier that the rating
was purely for the
dramatic situations of the
characters. Not so,
Charlie Brown. These
characters cuss and that
is a parting of the ways
from Snow White and
those dwarfs. There is not

Warner Robins Little
Theater has another play
to offer this week at the
Warner Robins Civic
Center. It is the family
play "Meet Me In St.
Louis". Now don’t go
expecting the music from
the old Judy Garland
musical. This is the
straight comedy version.
Tom Amaker is the
director and he has
assembled a cast that
includes some of middle
Georgia’s finest. Bill
Horton, Judy Treloar,
Gloria Brookshire,
Hugette Donaldson, and
Bill Lowe are just a few of
the fine actors who are
featured.
The play will be
presented Thursday,
Friday and Saturday
nights, January 10-12.
Make your plans to ride
over to Warner Robins
and see this fine play. I’ll
meet you in Warner
Robins for "Meet Me In
St. Louis”.
On Saturday and
Sunday I will be working
with Jerry Vincent on the
Cerebral Palsey telethon
in Warner Robins. The
telethon runs from 11:30
on Saturday night thru
6:00 p.m, on Sunday.
Henry Windier and Dick
Van Patten will be
hosting the event
nationally and Ralph
Pace and Jimmy Waters
will be the Macon hosts.
It is a very worthy
charity and I am very
pleased that they asked
me to help out. Call up,
say hello and make a
contribution.
If you hurry you can
still get down to the
theater here in Perry and
see two fine movies. I saw
them both this week and
one I liked and one I
didn't. The one I didn't
every one else I have
talked with did and it is
getting fabulous reviews
all over the country. So
what do 1 know!
The movie I did like
was "Meteor". It is the
story of a runaway
astroid heading toward
Earth. Sean Connery is
the physicist who has to
try to change its course.
Natalie Wood is a
Russian interpreter.
Henry Fonda is still the
President of the United
States.
The special effects of
the film are good and I
found the whole plot to be
exciting. Everything
about the movie makes
sense so you can really
identify with what is
going on. The only too
cute part of the plot is
enough profanity to cause
much concern from any
other film rated "PG”
but this is Disney and
every time one of the
characters sounded like
Rhett Butler I flinched.
There is a good bit of
tension in the sequences
too. One of the main
characters comes to a
somewhat violent end
even though it is not
shown on camera. There
is also a menacing robot
named "Maximillion”.
He is more sinister than
Darth Vader, and looks a
bit like him too.
The human actors are
mostly there just to move
the plot along, Joseph
Bottoms, Ernest
Borgnine, Yvette
Mimieux, Maxmillion
Schell, Robert Forster
that the meteor is
scheduled to hit the Earth
on a Sunday, December 7.
No one even mentions
that this is a rare coin
cidence.
Rated "PG”, the movie
is a little heavy with
profanity but what else is
new. 1 liked it all. It isn’t
heavy drama but it is
entertainment.

Donation To VGF
The Houston County United Givers Fund received a substantial boost
towards meeting its 1980 budget last Friday when the Trustees of the
Procter and Gamble Fund, through the Buckeye Cellulose Flint River
Plant and the local Buckeye employees, presented U.G.F. with donations
totaling $2,541. Cliff Woods, above right, of Buckeye, presented a check
for $250 from Procter and Gamble and $2,291 in individual contributiosn
from Buckeye employees to U.G.F. Campaign Chairman Joe Ferguson.
Procter &■ Gamble employees have historically participated in United
Fund giving and look forward to continuing participation in the future.

petently. The real stars of
the show are a robot
named "Vincent” and his
"old” friend Bob. Roddy
McDowell is the voice of
“Vincent” and he can do
more with his voice than
most actors can do with
their entire presence.
The "black hole” of the
title is a triumph of
special effects and gives
the film its dramatic
conclusion. This ending is
also the weakest part of
the film. It is too indebted
to "2001”, and that movie
also confused me. If
anyone out there un
derstood the ending,
write me at this paper
and explain it.
"The Black Hole” is an
action packed film that
isn’t heavy drama either,
nor is it a comedy. It is
half and half and that is
what messed it up for me.
1 found it to be an
unrealistic view of the
world of lawyers and
judges where just about
everyone was corrupt
and nobody, except good
old A1 Pacino, cared.
For me it was a
downer. But like I said at
HOUSTON HOAAE JOURNAL, THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 1980
should top the list of
money-makers for the
holiday season. The
special effects are
special, at least they
awed me. For some faith
ful watchers of Buck
Rogers they may be a
little less exciting. I think
the movie might be a
little too intense for the
youngest members of
your family so I would be
cautious about which of
my kids I took. That
might be just a little bit
overcautious on my part
but I can see "Max
million” causing a few
nightmares.
Overall the film is one
that lives up to the Disney
standards. It is just a
little more mature than
Disney films have been
before now.
the start. Everyone else I
have talked with loved it.
They found it funny and
well acted and true to life.
In this movie the
language rated an "R”,
that plus a glimpse of
nudity.
See it for yourself and
make your judgement. In
this case my opinion is
strictly that of the
minority.

“The Petting Zoo"
The Petting Zoo is one
of those rare novels that
are so different from the
mass market that they
capture a cult audience.
Lord Os The Flies, Cat
cher In The Rye, Joy In
The Morning and on a
larger scale Love Story
all have this uniqueness
in common.
The Petting Zoo deals
with the love story of
Mandy and Jake. She
loves life, he loves death,
they love each other. All
our lives we have been
hearing people say that
love is enough. This novel
says that it is not. Mandy
can’t love Jake to life.
She can only love him to
death.
Brett Singer has
created in her words of
Mandy a character who is
fully described in the
pages of the novel. She is

the fairy tale to save her
love story. Her parents

death at the end of the

This is Brett Singer’s
first novel and it is a good
one. There are lapses of
plot that hinder the
progress of the story such
as the side trip Mandy
makes to a writers
conference. Maybe
Singer meant for the
bizarre happenings there
to add to your knowledge
of Mandy’s character. It
seemed to me to be a
waste of the reader’s
time.
