sixth job with Mountain
Bell and loves every
minutes of it.
She is a cable splicer
in Deming, but also has
worked as a telephone
operator, service order
clerk, service
representative, junior
supervisor and installer.
Sue has been a cable
splicer for two and a half
years and has been with
Mountain Bell for the
past 11 years. So far,
cable splicing is the job
she has enjoyed most.
She is one of three
female cable splicers
employed by the
telephone company in the
southern portion of New
Mexico. One of the other
splicers, Theresa Ruiz of
Deming, currently works
in Las Cruces.
Sue, 30, splices aerial
cable, manhole cable and
buried cable.
After applying for the
job as splicer, she was
sent to learn the basics of
the job at an Albuquerque
school. The rest of the
learning process is on -
the - job training, which
takes about three mon
ths, she said.
Sue goes out on
assignments by herself
about half the time. Most
often, the splicers work in
pairs.
Usually, cable splicing
involves matching up
each side of three pairs of
wires, but there can be as
many as 2,700 wires per
cable to work with. The
wires are color-coded for
greater ease in matching.
Climbing up tall lad
ders use to frighten Sue a
bit, but she is adept at it
now, especially after her
pole climbing experience

Travelers Insurance
Companies, parent

Building
Increases
From 1979
According to City
Building Inspector Lanny
Coffman, a total of 14
building permits were
issued this November as
opposed to 8 last
November. The total of
permits issued from
January 1 until the end of
November is 144.
Out of these 14 permits
issued, five were for
single family houses,
seven were for
alterations and additions
to houses and two were
for commercial
buildings.
The valuation this year
was $4,566,125, a dif
ference from last year of

as an installer. Still, she
finds setting up her 28-
foot fiberglass extension
ladder by herself can be
awkward and hard work.
Sue said she had no
idea her first job with the
telephone company
would lead to her current
job. She would like to try
a different type of job at
the telephone company
some day. One of the big
pluses in working for
such a large company,
she said, is the ability to
transfer to another job
and learn new, exciting
skills.
Cable splicing and
repair work offers Sue
the chance to work
outside, which she en
joys. Also, her job is
never boring or routine.
She enjoys working with
the rest of the crew and
feels the pay is very good
for a woman in New
Mexico.
All of these reasons
combined make Sue
someone who truly enjoys
what she does five days a
week. The job is well
worth the daily two-hour
commute to and from Las
Cruces, she said.
