Coach Percy Hardy will be misted by many Westfield students, fans
and supporters next year.
Sidelines, from P . IB
with those that don’t require as
firm a hand.
As he explains, each student is
different and each needs to be
handled in a different way.
“You can’t always go by a
definite set of rules. It just
doesn’t work that way. You have
to bend rules in certain
situations, and maybe that’s
where 1 got myself in trouble.
But I’m still not ashamed of
anything I’ve done because I
always did what I thought was
right,” Hardy said.
He learned much of what he
tries to teach from a pair of his
high school coaches, Perry
High’s Eric “Fesser” Staples
and Bill Chappell, who guided
him through what was a rough
childhood.
“They always seemed to have
a kind word for me, and at that
time that meant the world to
me,” he remembers. Staples and
Chappell had a great influence
on the young Hardy’s life, and as
a coach he tried to have the same
influence on his students.
“I ride some kids pretty hard,
but some kids need that. They
may not appreciate it now, but
five or 10 years down the road, I
think they will be thankful of it,”
he said.
At 49, Hardy isn’t certain

which direction his life will now
take. He’s not sure if he will
continue coaching or where he
will be teaching, but the
uncertainty doesn’t bother him.
“The support I’ve received
from friends over the past couple
of weeks has been tremendous,
and because of that I’m not
worried at all about what I will do
next,” Hardy said, explaining
that his faith in God will lead him
to a better future.
After talking with Coach
Hardy and thinking more about
his departure, I guess the word
that would best sum up my
feelings now is sadness, not an
empty or helpless sadness but a
fulfilling sadness.
I’m saddened because I won’t
have the chance to shake his
hand and spend a few minutes
talking with him each day. But
I’m thankful that I had the
chance to get to know him over
the past few months and learn
from him.
Yes, Coach, you may not be

a great deal this year by the
example you set.
You’ve shown me what it

Anyone who watched Joey last
year may be surprised to know
that it wasn’t until the ninth
grade that Joey began playing
quarterback.
When he was younger, he
disliked the game because he felt
he was too small to play.
“I used to hate football. I was
always littlier than everybody
else and I used to get killed. Up
until the ninth grade, I always
wanted to be a basketball
player,” he remembered.
But in the eighth grade, Joey
began to grow and he decided to
give football another try.
In the ninth grade, he played
on the Hornets’ junior varsity
team, and in the tenth, he moved
up to the varsity where he was
one of three quarterbacks on the
team.
He shared time with the other
two quarterbacks during the
regular season, but by the time

the state playoffs came around,
he was the Hornets’ starter.
But it was last year that Brett
really began to excel at the
position. During the season, he
completed 58 of 121 passes for
nine touchdowns and an
incredibly low four interceptions.
He also rushed for 374 yards
on 104 attempts and ran for 10
touchdowns.
In addition to being one of the
top quarterbacks in Middle
Georgia, Brett also was
impressive as the Westfield
punter, where he carried a 36.6
yard a kick average, including a
69 yarder in a critical spot in the
Hornets’ victory over First
Presbyterian.
For his performance, Brett was
picked as the GISA All-State
quarterback and received the
same honor for Region 3-AAA.
He was also the only junior and
one of only two private school
players to make the Macon
Telegraph and News’ All-Middle
Georgia team, where he was a
second team selection.
Brett, who tries to concentrate
on the present and not worry
much about the future, is right
now concentrating on getting
ready for next year, where he
hopes to lead the Hornets to a
state championship. But he has
still given some thought to where
he would like to play college ball.
"If I had to make a decision
right now, I would probably
choose from South Carolina or
North Carolina State. They’ve
shown a lot of interest and I
really like both schools,” he said,
but added that he is nowhere
near making a final decision.
His parents arc very
supportive of Joey’s sports
career and would go along with
wherever he wants to play but
they are hoping that he chooses
to attend a college that is close to
home.

“We already have one in
Colorado and hope Joey will stay
close,” Mrs. Brett said. Joey’s
older brother, Jeff, is currently
attending the Air Force
Academy. He has one other
brother, Jason, nine, who
attends Westfield.
But no matter where Joey
decides to go to college, one
thing for sure is that the Brett
house is going to be a busy place
next year during football season.
Well-wishers and reporters are
bound to be in and out of the
house on game days and at other
times, and recruiters will
probably be making their way to
see Joey later in the year.
As Joey put it, “It’s gang to
be exciting. 1 just wish it would
hurry up and get here.”
And right now, with the
promise he shows, it’s probably
safe to say that a lot of college
coaches are thinking the exact
same thing.
