Rivalry keen as ever In Ft. Valley
for Perry and Peach County war
By ANDY McGILL
Sports Editor
It was a vocal crowd “-ai cheered
for Perry' Friday night at the Perry-
Peach County football game. The
stands were nearly full as a good
number of Panther faithful drove
over to Fort Valley to see their
team in action.
However, the fans did not have
too much to cheer about, because
the Trojans finally scored with 21
seconds left in the second overtime
to win the game 6-0.
Perry's defense played heroically
with much encouragement from the
crowd.
Some staunch supporters were in
the stands and shared how they felt
about the rivalry between Perry and
Peach County.
"It's a natural rivalry,’ said
Ronnie Griffin, whose son Allen is
a backup kicker for the Panthers. 'lt
isn't but 12 miles apart"
Other fans agreed.
"It's always been a rivalry,’ said
Alton Ellis, a former Perry football
player in the early 19605. "It's so
close it s always been a heavy ri
valry. I think it's been real good and
clean."
Griffin said the rivalry is deep
seated and has been going on for
years. In fact, the fighting among
fans got so bad, all athletic compe
tition between the two schools was
discontinued for about 20 years,
from the 1940 s until 1962.
That year Perry and Peach
County met in the semifinals of the
Class B state tournament
Since then things have been
fairly smooth between the two
schools, although on occasion there
have been some altercations. But
it’s not something anyone is proud
of or wants any part of.
"I come to enjoy the game, and
when the game’s over, I go home,"
Griffin said.
Incidentally, the Peach County
Sheriffs Department did report sev
eral fights that broke out but they
were among Fort Valley fans.
Several scouts were present at
the game from other teams, includ
ing Pike County, Mary Persons and
Crisp County. Perry plays all three
teams this season.
Perry loses,
from P-1 A
covered a Trojan fumble.
Four rushing plays netted the
Panthers 10 yards down to the
Peach 22 before two consecutive
incomplctions gave the ball back to
the Trojans on downs.
Neither team threatened in the
second or third quarter.
In the fourth, the Panther defense
continued to dominate with some
outstanding play by Maurice Rele
ford, Jeff Collins, Johnathon Rele
ford and a host of others.
"It would be hard for me to sin
gle out one player right now," de
fensive coordinator George
Richards said after the game. "1
think they all played a super game
on defense.
"The thing we have to do right
now is keep our heads up and try to
get the offense on track.
"I think the defense has a chance
to be as good as any in the middle
Georgia area if they continue to
work at it hard.
"There were some guys out there
tonight that really showed me they
want to play football. I'm proud of
them," Richards added.
The Panthers will take the week
off next week before returning to
play Dooly County in Perry the
following week.
Peach will host nonregion foe
Greenville next week in Ft. Valley.

Panthers just ran out of time
By ANDY McGILL

Perry didn’t really lose the game
to Peach County Friday night; they
just ran out of time.
For 57 minutes and 39 seconds
the two teams battled to a scoreless
tie. But with time running out,
Peach's Dock Woodson ran the ball
in from the two-yardlinc for six
points. That was what separated the
Panthers and Trojans.
Peach County did manage to
control the ball most of the game,
which wore down the Perry defense.
The rushing totals at the end were
telling—Peach County 128, Perry
42.
At the end of the game, Coach
Ronnie Royston gathered his troops

The band was really blasting away at the game
... They marched at halftime
around him and told them that they
had done an admirable job. He said
they had played hard on every down
and had nothing to be ashamed of.
Royslon said he could not have
been more proud of his defensive
unit.
"I can't tell you how tickled I am
about the defense," Royston said.
"Our defense has a chance to be one
of the best in middle Georgia."
Royston said the difference in
the game was Perry's inability to
convert when they drove inside
Peach County territory on four
separate occasions.
He said specifically, the team
needs to work on offensive block
ing.
"1 lake full responsibility," he
said. "We did a poor coaching job.
We just need to go back to work."
The Panthers were not helped at
all by the officiating, which re
sulted in 165 yards in penalties in
the game. There was one particular
roughing the kicker call that Roys
ton said he couldn't believe.
"It might have been the poorest
call I've ever seen," he said. "There
was very poor officiating."
Late in the game, Perry also
suffered some nagging injuries to
its best running backs: Kelsey
Norwood had a sprained ankle,
Tony Brown had gotten banged up,
and Dwight Simmons also received
a sprained ankle.
