Nutritional information can be
obtained from coach or physician
By 808 EVANS

Sometimes the best source of
information on dietary information
may come from the local sports
coaches or physicians.
Many physicians have not taken
courses on nutrition, however some
do have an excellent background in
nutrition from official course work
or from their own reading of nutri
tion articles in medical journals.
Coaches also may or may not
have any formal training in nutri
tion classes, but due to their daily
activities of being involved in
sports, they are an excellent source
of information regarding dietary in
formation for athletes.
The most reliable information
comes from a group called "RD,"
Registered Dieticians.
These men and women have un
dergone rigorous training and un
dergraduate or graduate curriculums
in chemistry, nutrition, food, and
business and social sciences.
In addition they have completed
a year of clinical experience in a
medical surrounding, and have also
completed at least 15 hours of in
service education classes per year in
order to retain their titles as regis
tered Dieticians.

ported that six former college foot
ball stars have been inducted into
the 1989 GTE Academic All-
America Hall of Fame.
The GTE Academic All-America
Hall of Fame Class of 1989 in
cludes Dr. John Wilson, president
of Washington and Lee University,
Lexington, Va.; Dr. Jim Swink, an
orthopedic surgeon in Ft. Worth
Texas; Joseph Romig, an astro
physicist from Boulder, Colorado;
Dr, Steven Bramwcll, an orthopedic
surgeon in Seattle Washington;
Willie Bogan, an attorney in Los
Angeles, California; and Carlos
Alvcrc/, an attorney in Tallahassee,
Florida.
The six honorees represent the
second class of inductees named to
the GTE Academic All-America
A good example of the coaching
staff being aware of what to cal for
best performance is Coach George
Richard of Perry High School.
Coach Richard explained, "If you
can educate the athlete to the basic
food groups and what they do for
the sports active person, they will
do a much better job than those
who have not taken the time to
consider what they cal before taking
part in athletic competition."
Complex carbohydrate groups of
food such as pastas, whole wheat
bread, rice, or spaghetti, produces
excellent results if eaten the night
before a big game.
If one limits his or her use of
manufactured sugar and instead uses
natural sugars such as found in
fruits like oranges, bananas, apples
or other fruits will provide a good
quick energy source.
Coach Richard confirmed
that,"Manufactured sugar will give
a high energy source quickly, hut
when the athlete peaks out during
competition and starts to tire, they
would fall below a normal
performance level quicker than by
making use of natural sugar found
in fruits"
Excess sugar in the stomach
helps to increase dehydration, and
tournament was between the
defending champs of Buckeye and
the V.O.C.A team of Perry. Buck
eye defended their title by winning
over V.O.C.A.
The fourth game of the night
started at 9:00 p.m. between The
Smoke House team of Perry and
The East Side Lakers. The East
Side Lakers team sailed to a win
over The Smoke House team.
The fifth and final game of the
night was when the 5 Star team

Perry. When the game ended it
was 5 Star on top.
The second night of the week
long tournament started at 8:00
p.m. with the winners bracket
which consisted of 8 Pak and Fort
Valley State. 8 Pak look the win.
At 9:00 p.m. The East Side

Hall of Fame. They were selected
from among nominees chosen by
the 1,400 member CoSIDA from
past Academic All-Americans from
the 1950'5. 60's, and 70's.
GTE in cooperation with
CoSIDA, established the Hall of
Fame in 1988 to honor former col
lege athletes who have attained
achievement in their chosen profes
sions and have made substantial
contributions to their communities.
James L. "Rocky" Johnson,
chairman and executive officer of
GIE said."ln today's society, where
proper role models seem scarce,
these six men set a shining exam
ple for America's youth. Their
achievements affirm that competing
at the highest level of college
sports can be combined with
achievement in the classroom and
in one's chosen profession."
then liquids arc needed and
sometimes the athlete will over do
the intake of liquids and get sick.
Coach Richard suggested that
everyone read the labels of liquids
that you arc going to drink while
competing in sports, and look for
ones that have the words "Contains
Glucose Palmars," since these types
will restore needed liquids lost
during competition that will not
harm die body.
Anodicr food source to consider
would be that of protein. Any
athlete who has suffered an injury
needs protein to repair damaged
muscle fibre. Protein builds muscle
fibre and helps the athlete to return
quicker after an injury.
Vegetables such as beans, and
meals arc good sources of protein.
The types of meal that arc low in
fat content and high in protein
The chicken and fish catagorics
have the least amount of cholesterol
and usually athletes will lean to
ward the fish and chicken rather
than red meats such as hamburgers.
What the athlete in competition
cals to stay healthy may also be the
answer to many dietary problems
and be useful to not only athletes,
but everyone who cares about what
they cat.
The winner between East Side
and Buckeye Wednesday at 7:00
will then play 8 Pak at 8:00. The
winner of the game at 8:00 will
then advance to the finals in the
winners bracket and will then lake

The final game of the tourna
ment will be played on Thursday

For those of you who may have
noticed the Bill Elliott famous #9
race car around the town of Perry,
and tried to gel a second look at
who was driving it, well here is a
picture of the car and driver.
The car is being operated by
Robert G. "Bert" Hahn Jr., and not
Bill Elliott the race car driver.
The reason for it being here in
the town of Perry is that "Bert
Hahn" the driver, who is the Sales
Representative for the Coors Com
pany who’s name and decals appear
on the side of the car, is with the
Mid-Georgia Sales Company on
San Carlos Drive in Macon who
distributes the sponsors product
"Coors Beer," and he makes regular
trips to Perry to service customers
of die company.
Hahn said that often people will
be looking at the car when he stops
at one of his customers and it is a
compliment to have the car to be
noticed by fans who follow the rac
ing circut.
Now you know

Mary Young, the mother of Burkes Young who is a
student at Westfield High School brings in her
contribution to the covered dish Spring Sports Banquet
which was held at Westfield High School on Tuesday
evening. Mrs. Young was one of many parents and
friends of Westfield students who helped make the
banquet a success by making up a platter of food for
those to enjoy who attended the banquet
as they took on the Mels and the
Dodgers.
The Red Sox whipped the
Dodgers 15-7 in a four inning game
as the Sox picked up six runs in the
first, three in the second, and six in
the third.
The Dodgers had three runs in
the first, two in die second, and one
