Dow drops
for holiday
Slock prices closed the week
moderately lower as Wall Street
prepares for the long Memorial Day
Holiday weekend. The Dow Jones
Industrial Average finished Friday
at 2493.77, slipping back across
the 2500 barrier by a little more
than 7 points. Volume was strong
most all week with the exception of
Friday as most traders opted for an
early start on The Memorial Day
Weekend.
The Commerce Department re
ported Friday that April personal
income rose 0.4% and that was
about in line with expectations.
The surprise came in personal
spending, which was up more than
1.1% and the nations savings rate,
which decreased to 5.3%. However,
a closer look at spending reveals
that the bulk of the activity came as
a result of new car incentives,
which is great news for the close to
expectations. The American
consumer saved less disposable
income in April than in March.

Walker was named to the post
by House Speaker Tom Murphy,

And, while spending is on the rise
somewhat, the report shows that we
arc spending our dollars more care
fully.
First quarter GNP came in at a
revised 4.3%, and this was down
from real growth of 5.5% in March.
Non-farm GNP was also dewn to
1.8% from 3% and both revisions
arc lower than expected. The good
news hidden in these figures is that
inflation is running about in line
with 1988 figures. Overall, still a
good argument for no recession
through 1990 and a soft landing in
the economy for 1988. Enjoy The

By MELODY BACAS
Staff Writer
There is a new haven along In
terstate 75 in Perry for those
traveling through the state. It's
called the Sing Travel Center,
The new travel slop, located at I
-75 and Thompson Road, is a sister
to Sing on Main Street which is
managed by Allen Cagle. Only the
new one is more adequately
equipped to handle more customers
at once, according to manager
Tommy Willard.
Willard said building the Sing
Travel Center is a first for the
company.
"This is the first travel center
and it's located here in Perry, and
Sing has stores in Georgia, Florida,
Alabama and Mississippi. That
says a lot for Perry and 1-75,"
Willard said.
The manager said the location of
the ,store was ideal because of the
interstate and the growing commu
nity in this area.
The Sing Travel Center, when
complete, will have everything the
other store does including a deli
catessen, plenty of last-minute,
