We try!
Since I have been in the news
paper profession as a writer, pho
tographer and reporter, I have had
the occasion to write many stories
on schools and their sports activi
ties. Some of the stories were easy
to write and others took consider
able thought and concentration.
It is easy to write a story on
someone who wins a game, because
they arc eager to talk about their
win. They will give an endless
supply of material about good
plays, highlights of the game, what
they have done to prepare for the
game whatever sport it may be,
numerous quotes to use, and in
general a good overall view of the
game, from their prospective.
But when it comes to writing
about those who lost, or weren't the
center of attention and you arc
sometimes faced with a dilemma.
You want to be accurate, and tell
the story exactly how it happened,
which, if you follow correct styles
in journalism is not extremely a
hard task to do.
At this point however, is where
it gels tough.
If you say that the player or
” players who were involved in a
certain play of the game looked like
a bunch of clowns taking part in an
unorganized Chinese fire drill
instead of functioning like a team
player or players in the game you,
make people mad, but in essence
you are being accurate, and you arc
using words to illustrate a point.
Accuracy and fairness to all
competitors and individuals arc the
main items you strive for.
A fair, impartial, and accurate
report of an event is going to at
some point draw criticism from
someone, because the thing all
reporters have been cautioned about
in journalism is the famous
quote,"YOU CANNOT PLEASE
EVERYONE," but we try to and
sometimes arc disillusioned.
Whenever a person reads an arti
cle you have written, there will be
some who agree with you and some
who don't. This is a "normal" reac
tion, we as journalists arc told.
There will always be someone
who is going to be upset because
you gave too much publicity to one
person or team and not enough to
someone else.
It sometimes should be filed un
der the heading of 'Jealousy,' and
then again sometimes those
individuals do have the right to be
upset, because they have given
freely of their time to help a cause
and never had a word said about
them or what they have done.
But the question arises, What
have they done to provide correct
information so that a reporter docs
get an accurate and fair story about
any one individual?
The ones who complain the
most wait until a story appears in
the paper and then do so in a
vindictive way so that you arc one
between the proverbial "rock and
hard place' instead of them.
Here is where the pressure be
comes applied to you as a writer,
from parents, faculty, coaches, fans,
and even sometimes you are threat
ened with losing your job because
you didn't give a certain person
enough space in the story for their
name to appear, and the good they

Members of the Perry Country

Memorial Day Flag Shootout
Tournament at the Perry Country
Club on Monday.
Approximately 50 or more
members participated in the event
which was held in accordance with
club rules for the tournament.
The formal for the tournament
was that each player was given an
American flag with their name at
tached to the flag.
The individual player must lake
his or her handicap and add that
handicap to par for the course at the
Perry Country Club, and then
wherever they hit their last shot on
the course, that is the spot they
would place their flag.
The ones getting the flag the
furthermost around the course
would be designated as the winner
and on down to the first leading five
flags placed on the course.
For example: if Mr. or Mrs.
X had a handicap of 10, they would
add that to 71 which is par for the
course at Perry Country Club, giv
ing them a total of 81.
