THE HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL WEDNESDAY MAV 31 1989
4B
We try , from P-1B
have done (or the team or organiza
tion they belong to.
When you arc covering news and
sports related activities you can’t
usually write the story until the ac
tivity is completed, so you become
laced with the pressure of deadlines
and getting the right information
about the game or event in time to
meet those deadlines.
Sometimes not meeting those
deadlines can cost hundreds or even
thousands of dollars to your news
paper
Past experience shows that in
general most of the people involved
in activities held, don't care one bit
about the pressure a writer is under,
or what he or she has to sacrifice to
give them a story they w ill be sat
isfied with.
The slock answer you gel is,
"Well you chose the newspaper
profession and that's what comes
with the job."
Well they arc right! Wc as jour
nalists did chose the newspaper
profession and yes problems do
come with the job, but wc will
never be offended if someone has
(constructive criticism) that will
help us as journalists do a better
job, because that is the way wc
loam as writers.
What docs offend us, is when
Texaco
ladies,
from P-3B
Boys, Tommie T’s and Cannon,
Cannon played an error less game
to defeat and pul the Rincr boys out
of the tournament and give them
third place in the tournament.
The final game of the tourna
ment which began at 4:00 p.m.
Sunday was between undefeated
Tommie T's and Cannon.
The break between games for
mimic T's help them to edge the
annon team by the score of 14-13
1 seven innings.
Awards,
from P-1 B
Mi/.ell and Jonathon Rclcford and
the Curtis Rincr Award went to
Jimmy Dunlap. Sclarvin Jackson
a presented with a special award
r Comeback of The Year after
turning from a prior injury. The
: tensive secondary was named as
die best coached group of the game.
Maurice Rclcford look MVP on
the defense, and the offensive line
i ok the MVP's as a group.

High jump catch
The third baseman for the Excels softball team makes an
airborne catch in the game against All Star Athletics at
Rozar Park over the weekend. The Excel girls won over
the Allstar team by a score of 14-3. The competition in
the Curtis Riner Memorial Softball Tournament started
on Friday and continued through Sunday with the grils
from Texaco taking first place in the womens division
and the Tommie T's taking first place in the mens
division. The tournament was one of the many events
sponsored by the Booster Club of Perry High School.
Now you know
If you arc going on a long trip
by auto and want to carry your owr
food, plan on carrying at least two
pounds of food per person per day
gpne.
/
someone who has absolutely no
idea what it takes to put a paper to
gether under deadlines and pressure,
and docs not even buy the newspa
per wc write for, wants to complain
about what wc have written.
Speaking for myself, I try to do
the best possible job I can, while
being accurate and fair to everyone I
write a storv about. 1 have abso
lutely nothing to gain by making
someone look better than others.
All of the writers at the Home
Journal arc at all times open to
suggestions that will make the sto
rics better and help the readers un
derstand just exactly w hat is going
on or has gone on.
If at any time you wish to ex
press an opinion with reference to a
story that appeared, write a letter to
us at the paper and allow us to re
spond to any complaints or praises.
If you do not wish to sign your
name, that is OK. At least we at
the paper will have an idea of your
opinion of us.
However, if you wish the letter
printed in the paper you must sign
your name and address to the letter.
The only thing I ask you to
consider is our feelings as writers,
as well as your own, for wc as
journalists do not make the news,
wc report it! Think about it.
Hornets,
from P-1 B
But lime ran out before the White
could mount another scoring drive
as the Green pulled out the 8 point
victory.
"I was suprised with the spring
game," said Coach Gordon Powers,
"Wc all brought it together and
made a lot of progress in 9 days."
The Hornet coaching staff had
three goals for spring, getting a
balanced running attack, thrwoing
the ball to the backs, and having
the defense develop a strong,
agressive altitude.
The numbers seem to indicate
that the Hornets planning worked.
The Hornets had 6 running backs
that were very close together in
statistics. Westfield had over 100
yards in passing yardage to the
backs and the defense showed
everybody a hard hitting game.
The Hornets will continue to
condition themselves in preparation
for the fall season.
Now you know
In a national study, it was
reported that in fifty per cent of the
times when an employee calls in
sick, he or she is really sick.
Now you know
The average tractor-trailer
travelling down an interstate
highway gets between four and six
miles per gallon of diesel fuel used.

When the excitement ended for

Second place- Jew Andrews, Third
place- Denny Dicks, Fourth placc-
Ken Brown, and Fifth place went to
Bob Allen.
Club Pro Rodney Dill thanked
everyone for taking part in the
tournament and said, "The members
had a good time and had the chance
to get together and enjoy Memorial

the club."
There were some of the partici

to finish up at the end of 18 holes
and just keep their flags as a sou
