In Bth Ron Stafford Memorial Tournament
Over two hundred
golfers compete

The parking lot was full, the
clubhouse was full, the pro shop
was full, and the driving range and
practice greens were full of anxious
golfers that were participating in
the "Bth Annual Ron Stafford
Memorial Tournament" that was
held at the Houston Lake Country
Club over the weekend.
A record number of over 200
golfers showed up to play in the
tournament that was named and
dedicated in honor of the young
golfer who loved the sport of golf,
and had many friends around Perry
and at Houston Lake Country Club,
Ronald Edward Stafford.
Ron Stafford for whom the
tournament is named, lost his life
in an automobile accident in 1981

Close up golfers win
at HLCC tournament

The competition in the Blh An-
nual Ron Stafford Memorial Tour-
namcm at Houston Lake Country
Club was pretty lough, but there
were a few who took part in the
competition that managed to gel
some pretty nice shots for the close
up awards.
On the Saturday part of the
tournament those golfers winning
the dose up awards were, Sonny
Livingston made it on the number
3 hole, Chris Wood on number 8,
Gordon Mclntire on number 11,
Westfield's Campbell
hosting tennis camps

Youngsters arc learning the sport
of tennis thanks to Westfield Coach
Donna Campbell. Campbell is
hosting two tennis camps this
week, one for grades two through
five, and another for grades six
through nine.
"Thursday and Friday we will
hold a boys and girls tournament,"
said Campbell.
"We're working on the
fundamentals, the forehand.

When Sunday's part of die tour

awards for close ups.
On the number 3 hole it was A1
Lasseter, on the number 8 hole
Mike Scroggins got the win, and
then A1 Lasseter did it again on the
number 11 hole, and Chris Wood
repeated his Saturday performance
on number 15, and Bill Handy took
the number 17 hole. All the win
ners were awarded prizes at die end
of the tournament.

the older camp and seven for the
younger camp. "Our groups arc
good size," said Campbell.
For the little ones this is most
of them's first experience playing
tennis. The older ones have a little
more experience as Campbell noted.
"Tennis is a great game. If you
get the basics then you can play
forever," said Campbell.

bases after a good hit and they will be more than glad to
explain how they do it. Terry Yawn and Tim Allen of the
Kiwanis team are chalking up experience in the home

Perry's United Methodist
team undefeated with 12-0
record in church league

When it comes to being the lops
in their class, the members of the
Perry United Methodist Church
softball team arc right up there
where it counts.
The team is now undefeated widt
a 12 and 0 record and one of the
toughest teams they will be going
up against will be the team from
Second Baptist from Warner Robins
in a game at Pcavy Park.
They have already defeated the
Second Baptist team earlier this
year in their first game against
them, but it wasn't until the last
inning that they were able to save
the game.
Coaching the team this year is
Tim Spencer who is the Youth and
Recreation Director at Perry United
Methodist Church and Ben Ham
rick, who also helps coach one of
the girls softball teams.
Team members playing this year
for the Perry United Methodist
Church team are Franklin Moore,
Chuck Hogatc, Wayne Lowrey,
David Vuxta, Tom Schlau, Scott
Kinnas, John Clay, Bert Holmes,
Waller Gray, Wesley Jones, Joey
Brett, Steve Stubbs, and Jason
Hancock, and player coaches Tim
Spencer and Ben Hamrick.
The team plays a total of 9
teams in the Warner Robins
League, and must play each team

twice for a total of 18 regular sea
son games.
This is their first year to play in
the Warner Robins League and
most of their players are relatively
new to the team, but they must be
doing something the right way to
be in the position they hold for the
present.

of the first round of the world fa
mous Oldsmobile Scramble Tour
nament that was held recently at the
club and ended up in a tic for first
place between the team of John
Shaginaw, Danny Shelton, Harry
Hawkins, and Steve Howard, and
the team of Carl Pierce Lyle Fincis,
Herb Wells, and Bob Heitholt.
To settle the matter a special
shoot-off was scheduled for last
week, but due to the heavy rains
and winds, wasn’t able to finish up
until Saturday morning.

gia," said Bobby Jones of Perry.
One of the golfers who competed
against them said,"lt ought to be
against the law for those two guys
to play together in a tournament."
Who they were talking about
was Eddie Causey and Joey Kancy,
the winners of the "Bth Annual Ron
Stafford Memorial Golf Tourna
ment" that was held at Houston
Lake Country Club over the week
end.
Causey and Kancy teamed up to
take on the competition and when
the last stroke of the tournament
was made and the last ball dropped
in the cup, they had made history at
the Houston Lake Country Club
with a record low score of 127.
This is the second time that Ed
die Causey and Joey Kaney have
shared the lop spot together and
won the Ron Stafford Memorial
Tournament.
They played together as a team
in 1987 and came out with the first
place spot in that year's competi

surrounding areas who enjoy play
ing the game of tennis. Perry High
School's Head Tennis Coach Mike
Major's announced today that there
will be an upcoming tennis tour
nament that will be open to both
men and women scheduled for
Rozar Park in the near future.
Majors said, "The tournament
will be for both singles and doubles
Brenda Davis wins in
golf chipping contest

HLCC club member and local
Perry resident Brenda Davis is
moving up the ladder in the local
golf circles and this lime at Hous
ton Lake Country Club on Saturday
she won the golf chipping contest
first place award.
Brenda was one of the four per
sons that finished in the winners
circle of the tournament, along with
Jerry Cash who took second place
and Billy Lambert and Eddie Wilson
were tied for the third place award.

The pair have always played well
in competition as a team and Eddie
Causey has been on a winning
streak all spring and so far into the
summer tournaments. He has placed
first in the last five tournaments
that he competed in.
However on this trip, although
they look first place as a team, Joey
Kancy look command of the lowest
score of the two individually with a
61 to Causey's 66.
Here is how the scores went in
the tournament; Eddie Causey and
Joey Kancy, first place with 127,
Hugh Darsey and John Turk with
132 took second, Smokey Keeney
and Bobby Lane took third with
135, and there was a three way tie
for fourth place between the team of
Chico Hobbs and Sonny Liv
ingston, the team of Sonny Tram
mel and Chris Wood, and the team
of Larry Human and Don Crump in
the "Championship A Flight.”
In the "Championship B
Flight," Tec Tolleson and Eddie
Wilson tied with Bobby Jones and

There is no age limit set and
anyone can compete. The registra
tion fees will be $lO for singles and
$5 each for doubles players.

onships for this area are being held
at the Houston Lake Country Club
sometime in August and will in
clude competing golfers from sev
eral country clubs.
Perry Country Club's winning
team will be travelling to Dun
woody Country Club in Atlanta on
August 14 to compete in their next
round of the sectional tournament
