David Keene shows the new Nor Mark Weigh-in elec
tronic scale. The Weigh-in brings high-tech so
phistication to figuring up the poundage of that lunker
you just landed. Convenient yet accurate, the Weigh-In
has a digital, liquid crystal display readout and weighs
fish up to 10 pounds. The Weigh-in uses a nine volt
battery and sells for $29.75. It's available at Chuck's
Bait and Tackle in Warner Robins.
Fishing report, from p-6b
Some are catching ’em, some are not. Those that get out early in the
morning are catching fish. One man caught 10 bass in the 1 1/2 to 4
pound range around the jetties. Another caught a 9-pound bass on a
popping lure on the surface. One caught about six on the ledges, with
cotton candy worms. Crappie are hitting in the late afternoon and early
evening. Reported by Art Cunningham, Lake Point State
Park Marina.
OCONEE The lake is full and cloudy, but clearing. Largemouth are
hitting pumpkin seed worms, spinnerbaits and Rat-L-Traps, off points
and around the rip rap. Crappie are doing fair on minnows. Bream are
good, on crickets. Catfish are doing good on worms. They're still
catching some hybrids and stripers early in the morning on the south
side of bridges, on live shad, but they're starting to tail off. Re
ported by Gary Donoho, Blue Springs Marina.
Salt water report
SHELL POINT, FLA. They're catching a few mackerel and
some speckled trout on the flats, using live shrimp and grubs. They're
getting some grouper, rock bass and grunts in about 50 feet of wafer,
using cigar minnows and LYs. The weather has been nasty, though it’s
fair now, but still overcast. Tides are: Saturday, L 12:23 a.m. -- H 6:55
a.m. -- L 12:27 p.m. - H 6:23 p.m., Sunday, L 1:05 a.m. - H 7:32 a.m. --
L 1:34 p.m. -- H 7:37 p.m. Reported by Dink Williams, Shell
Point Marina.
SUWANNEE, FLA. It’s picked up a little. It'll be all right if the
weather will ever straighten up. They're getting a few trout and some
reds, using jigs and shrimp. I haven't seen anyone fishing offshore.
Tides are: Saturday, H 6:25 a.m. -- L 12:10 p.m. - H 5:45 p.m., Sunday
H 7 a.m. -- L 1:20 p.m. -- H 7:05 p.m. Reported by Ray Taylor,
Bill's Fish Camp.
Jack Nash Is too busy for much hunting and fishing these days
...He still dove hunts, and he’s teaching his kids the same way he was taught
Nash is all-around outdoorsman, from p-6B
automatics."
Jack said his father, Ed Nash,
now retired, still hunts with them,
and docs ail their reloading.
"Any lime you can spend with
your kids means a lot," Jack said.
"There arc so many kids that don’t
have the opportunity."
Jack doesn't get to do much
fishing anymore, but his younger
son, Ben, does.
"My ninc-ycar-old has his own
boat and motor," he said. "He's a
very avid bass fisherman."
Jack lives on Houston Lake, so
Ben gets plenty of chances to fish.
"Bill Guthrie, our next-door
neighbor, is retired, and he spends a
lot of lime teaching Ben," he said.
"The last lime I went with Ben, we
trolled from our house down toward
Ray Whitney's. By the lime we
reached the dam, he'd caught three
bass and I hadn't had a bite."
Jack has been into almost every
type of hunting available in this
area at one lime or another.
"I haven't done any deer hunting
the last three years,” he said. "I
guess from the lime I was about 16
until I was 25, I went just about
every day deer season was in."

THE HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL, SATURDAY, JUNE 24,1989
Bobby Tuggle, from p-ee
hunting. The game hogs are far
more prevalent than night hunters,
and many of our friends fall into
this category. These arc the every
day hunters who go on dove shoots
and kill 50 to 100 doves, kill six or
seven deer, or slaughter wood ducks
on the roost.
This seems to be a macho thing
with some hunters, and they pride
themselves on the amount of game
that they kill. I have found that
many of these hunters who take so
much are the ones who will not
join Ducks Unlimited, The Turkey
Federation or other conservation
organizations. They take far above
their quota of game and never put
anything back into the outdoors.
The old Southern tradition of
having large dove shoots and prid
ing ourselves on the large number
of doves killed per hunter is,
thankfully, dying out. More and
more dove shoot hosts arc requiring
their guests to stop with their legal
limit.
For the past four years, I have
been putting on a dove shoot for 50
or 60 Ducks Unlimited slate offi
cers on a farm near Perry. The first
year that we had the shoot we re

quired the hunters to stop with their
limit of 12 birds and leave the field.
We heard some grumbling at
first, but as the hunters quickly
limited out and came from the field
we could sense a pride and self-es
teem that they had gained in slop
ping at the limit. Many of them
said that it was the first time that
they had ever left a field with the
birds still flying.
We give prizes for the first three
hunters to limit out and leave the
field, and we are seeing the hunters
lake pride in their shooting ability
rather than the amount of game
taken. Many of the hunters arc now
bringing small gauge guns such as
410's and 28's to make it more dif
ficult to bag their limit. I do not
believe that you could gel any of
these hunters to shoot over their
limit again,
I believe that the only real solu
tion to the problem of the "Slob”
hunter is to educate the young
hunters in hunting ethics. It is
probably 100 late to change many
of the older hunters. We need to set
an example for the young people as
they grow up hunting with us.
