Two local students
attend Rotary meet
South Georgia College in Dou
glas was the site of Georgia's first
ever Rotary Youth Leadership
Awards Conference.
Robert Lynch from Westfield
High and Kurt Woods from Perry
High were among the 60 students
who represented Rotary Clubs from
across the state.
The rising juniors and seniors
were chosen on the basis of charac
ter, leadership qualities, general ed
ucation, personality, and leadership
potential.
The students lived and learned at
the college. The theme of the four
day program was "Fellowship."
During the conference, the stu
dents enjoyed presentations from
speakers such as Rep. Bo Ginn, Dr.
Tal Duvall, and Donna Goldstein.
In addition to classes and lec
tures, the students attended orga
nized social, entertainment and
sporting functions.
The awards conference will be an
annual event for Georgia Rotary.
Escapee is back in correctional facility

The inmate who escaped
Wednesday is back at the Houston
County Correctional Institution and
is being held in segregation, War
den Larry Fairchild said Friday.
Donald Darwin Thompson, 29,
of West Virginia, drove away from
a work site near Elko in a county
dump truck, but was recaptured later
the same day.
Thompson apparently fled be
tween 10 and 11 a.m., according to
Deputy Warden Larry Cromer, but
was not missed until about 5:15,
when he failed to return from work
detail.
Cromer said the inmate, who
was supposedly under the supervi
sion of Roads and Bridges worker
C.W. Bryan, was supposed to be

Thompson was serving a life
pi us- 10-ycar sentence for kidnap
ping and burglary, after being ar
rested in Columbia County in
September 1976.
He had been at HCCI since Au
gust 1987.
He just missed parole this year,
Cromer said, and would have been
eligible again in another eight
months.
"He was an excellent prisoner,"
Cromer said.
Thompson was seen ditching the
dump truck near Toccoa, in
Stephens County in northeast
Georgia, about 6 p.m., and his shirt
and glasses were found in the woods
nearby.
Law enforcement officers and
bloodhounds then tracked Thomp
son to a Hardee's in Camcsville, in
neighboring Franklin County,
where he was arrested without inci
dent, Cromer said.
"I guess he just got hungry,"
Reading Club
activities slated
The "Find Time for Mystery"
Summer Reading Club is in full
swing at the Pcrry-Houston County
Public Library. This week's
activities include:
•"Prehistoric Mysteries,"
featuring "What Happened to
Patrick’s Dinosoars?" will be
featured at the Wednesday, June 27
and Thursday, June 28 story time at
10 a.m. for preschoolers (ages 3-5)
and grades K-2.
•Three Filmstrips, "A Dark,
Dark Talc" and "Pinkerton,
Behave," based on picture books in
our own collection and the "Case of
the Hungry Hitchhiker," an
Encyclopedia Brown mystery, will
be shown at the Tuesday, June 27
audio-visual show at 2:30 p.m. It
will last approximately 45 minutes
and is for children grades K-6.

Fairchild said the case was under
investigation and refused to com

Liquor taken from store
An $8 bottle of liquor was
reported stolen from the Omni
Package Store on Hodges Boulevard
Tuesday night.
A theft of $5 worth of goods
from the Suwannee Swifty on
Hodges Boulevard Thursday night.
A woman reported the theft of
$9 from her residence on Elaine
Street Thursday.
A shoplifter was reported at
Starvin Marvin on Sam Nunn
Boulevard Thursday morning.
The theft of $5 worth of
merchandise from Zeb's Zip-In on
Marshallville was reported
Wednesday night.

Fourly-four-year-old Herman
David Slandridgc escaped in January
by driving off in a Mercedes Benz
which had been confiscated in a
drug arrest last year.
Standridge was captured two
