Have a
safe 4th
The fourth of July will be before
we know it and everyone is packing
their vacation clothes and swim
ming suits to make the annual get
a-way from it all for a couple of
days or weeks.
There will be swimming, boat
ing, fishing, golf, fireworks, and
probably a few million tippings of
the old aluminum cans with the
bubbling beverage that causes some
to see double and even more.
Its’ that time and one thing that
we all should keep in mind is safety
on the fourth and over the holiday
vacation trips.
The traffic on the interstates will
probably triple within the next few
days and that means that some of
those individuals will be driving
who have been bending their el
bows tipping up some of those
cans of their favorite beverage.
It is hard to play football, base
ball or any other sport in a body
cast or leg cast, so this is the time
when you need to lake a little extra
care in your driving and your drink
ing.
One good rule is if you arc go
ing to drink, "Don't Drive". Os
course that is like saying to a child
who loves ice cream, and has a dish
of cool dessert selling in front of
him on a hot day, don't cat it, 1
know, but if anything that is writ
ten in this column helps save a life
by someone thinking about it, well
it was worth writing.
Some have adopted the rule as
their own personal law and when
they consume alcoholic beverages,
they have someone else do the
driving, which is a pretty neat thing
to do.
First they don’t get in accidents
because of having too much to
drink, second, they get to keep their
drivers license and privilege to op
erate a motor vehicle, and third they
don't usually spend the holiday va
cation taking trips in ambulances,
or in some local iron bar motel
calling bail bondsmen and attor
neys.
So you see, there are some
benefits to not drinking and driving,
and the old cliche just may still be
correct when you think about it,
"The life you save may be your
own."
There will be some that will
criticize you and think you arc
dumb or being prudish or chicken
because you won't have a drink or
two, but kind of keep in mind your
friends won't be paying the time for
the crime. It will be coming out of
your pocket.
What's worse yet is you might
end up spending what started out to
be a great vacation in a place no
one wants to visit.
Well anyway, no more preach
ing, that is out of my jurisdiction
and I'm not qualified to do it any
way.
I hope everyone has a great
Fourth of July and that when the
new sports seasons come up in the
fall everyone will be able to be
there to take part in the events
whether by being a participant or a
spectator in ths bleachers, because
they look the time to play it safe.
So you all have a good and safe
vacation with your friends and
families, and we will sec you when
you get back.
