Diveticula relate
to fiber in diet
Diverticula are out-poundings of
the intestinal wall, most often seen
in the colon. Normally the
intestinal wall is straight, although
flexible. The pressure of food waste
passing through keeps the walls
pushed out flat. But sometimes out
pounchings are formed, perhaps
because a low-fiber, low-bulk diet
doesn't exert enough pressure on the
intestinal wall, or perhaps because
the normal strength of the wall is
lost with age. When a person has
many diverticula, they have a
condition known as diverticulosis.
Some people with diverticulosis
don't have any symptoms, but most
experience cramping pain,
distension, diarrhea, or
constipation.
The diverticula are like little sacs
or pockets along the wall. As food
passes through the digestive tract,
some food particles may get trapped
inside these little sacs. If the
trapped food (or waste material) gets
infected, then the disease is called
