Berry commented on an article in
The New York Times which said
the FAA is not able to do its job
correctly. It commented on the
"lapses in repair control records."
Berry stated though the article is
not inaccurate, it does not reflect
the truth.
"There arc lots of facets to the
FAA. Standards arc only one facet,"
explained Berry.
Berry admitted the agency relics
on the companies to maintain the
aircrafts and due to under staffing
and low financing, it will remain
that way.
There are nine regions in the
south and eleven offices - one in
each state and three in Florida. The
FAA hires 60 new positions a year
for maintenance inspectors.
However the department is
responsible for 3,500 separate
certificates on DC9 or larger
aircrafts, 26 turbo jet certificates,
12 commuter crafts, 448 charter
aircrafts, and 640 Agriculture
aircrafts.
We spend $35 million of your
tax money each year and we wish
we had S2O million more," said
Berry. "We approve of "heavy
check" on planes but we're not
equipped or staffed enough to handle
it."
He closed by assuring the
Kiwanians that "air transportation
is still here and still safe."
Bob Lawson and Jim Shipley,
Key Club Members from Westfield
High School, attended the meeting
as guests.
Kiwanis Club president Malcom
Reese announced the next board
meeting would be at the New Perry
Hotel April 16 at 1 p.m.
